Grab attacks cannot be blocked, making them ideal against blocking enemies, while also throwing opponents away. You can also grab downed enemies to continue dealing some damage to them. The grab can be countered by Super Sense, or avoided by disappearing, and since it is slower than normal fast attacks, it can also be interrupted if attacked while executing.

After a successful grab, you can extend the combo by performing a super attack or ultimate attack. Since enemies are thrown into the air after a successful grab, they'll have a harder time dodging your super attacks and will have to perfectly time their disappearance to avoid the attack. (In my experience, energy wave and explosive super attacks are more difficult to time away than melee super attacks because they tend to move towards the opponent faster).

Typically, you'll want to use Grab on an enemy that's blocking or an enemy that's downed after you attack. These are the best times to perform a grab, although you can also disappear or Z-dash behind an enemy and then use the grab as a simple setup for super and ultimate attacks.

Certain characters will have unique grab animations when facing certain opponents, often as a homage to attacks they used in the anime or manga. For example, Toppo has a unique grab animation when fighting Frieza, a nod to their battle in the Tournament of Power. These special grabs deal slightly more damage than normal throws as an extra incentive to find them, and Weiss' Seal Book also provides a bonus for finding these special grabs.
