The Night-Mare is the 5th DLC quest in the Brushes With Death expansion of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the The Night-Mare DLC quest.

  • Starting Location: Kuttenberg Region > Kuttenberg
  • Quest Giver: Master Voyta (Enigmatic Painter)
  • Requirement: Own Brushes With Death DLC and finished Portrait in Red.
  • Reward: Unique Devil Outfit if you let Bellissimo live and scare him (Lord of Hell’s helmet, Lord of Hell’s garb) / No reward if you killed Bellissimo
  • Quest Type: Side Quest
  • Quest Description: Voyta’s opus magnum is supposed to be a painting for the altar at Sedletz. However, after many years, his old friend Bellissimo reappeared in Kuttenberg, someone with whom he has unresolved issues from the past. Bellissimo is also interested in the project and seems to have struck a deal with the abbot to his own advantage. This is bad news for Voyta, who believed the commission was secure. How can Bellissimo be deterred? And how did he manage to get the commission?
  • DLC Required: Brushes With Death

Starting Location: The Night-Mare

After the previous quest Portrait in Red, you have to travel to Kuttenberg. If you haven’t been there yet, Kuttenberg is the capital city of the game’s second region, you reach it during Main Quest 16: Into the Underworld. So if you started the DLC early in the main story you’ll have to advance the story before you can continue. If you’re doing it post-story, you must go to the red carriage marker on the map and pay 200 gold to travel to Kuttenberg region.

In Kuttenberg the painter will have a purple quest icon:

Talk to him and exhaust the dialogues. The next objective will always be the same regardless of what you say, but for a good result go with this: “Thanks for the invitation” (Reputation+) > “Will this be your masterpiece?” > “That’s great” > “Who is he?” > “(Say Nothing)” > “Why was he so hostile?” > “It seems important to me” > “Stop keeping things from me” (Skill Check – if succeeded, reveals him and Bellissimo studied together) > “I’ll help you, my friend” (Reputation+) > “How about we dig up some dirt on him?” > “Where do I find Bellissimo’s baths?” > “Do you think he confides in the bathmaids?” > “Should I just go threaten him?”.

Inquire about Bellissimo at the baths

Regardless of how you suggested to harm Bellissimo (stealing his brushes, digging up dirt on him, injuring his hand, killing him), you always get the same objective. You must go to the bathhouse in the south of Kuttenberg city. Inside the bathhouse talk to Bathhouse Madam Beata, she should be on the ground floor in the room where the dice playing table is. She wears a red dress.

For the easiest solution tell her “I’m interested in the painter Bellissimo” > “He robbed my friend of his job“. Then exhaust the remaining dialogues in any order you like, the outcome will be the same and doesn’t affect anything. If you lie to her and say that you want to meet a famous painter, you will either have to bribe her for 50 Groschen or win a very hard speech skill check to get the info. Telling the truth that he robbed your friend is the easier choice so she gives the information freely.

Either way, it will be revealed that Bellissimo has a room upstairs in the restricted area of the bathhouse, and spends the day in the garden across the street.

The quest can now diverge in two ways: you can kill Bellissimo and return to Voyta, thus immediately finishing the quest. Or you can break into Bellissimo’s room, read the letter on his dresser, then report to Voyta and he suggests dressing up as the devil to scare Bellissimo into leaving the town. No matter how you solve this quest, Voyta doesn’t really care either way and will give the next 2 quests regardless.

[Solution 1: Killing Bellissimo] Tell Voyta that Bellissimo is dead

If you want to keep it simple, go to the big garden across the street to the south-east of the bathhouse (at the very southern corner of Kuttenberg bordering the city walls). During the day you can find Bellissimo there alone. For me he appeared at 9:30AM, just skip time in 1-hour increments from 9AM onwards until he appears. He usually sits on the bench in the corner of the garden or stands in the little shed on the side.

You can sneak up to him from behind and do a Stealth kill if you have a dagger equipped, or knock him out then slaughter his unconscious body. Since he’s alone in the garden nobody will notice and you can loot his money and equipment.

Afterward the objective updates to return to Voyta, exhaust the dialogue with him to finish the quest immediately. Henry will just say that Bellissimo won’t be a problem anymore, without confessing to the murder. So Voyta won’t know what happened and doesn’t care. Voyta gives the next 2 quests regardless of whether you killed Bellissimo or do the other option to scare him.

WARNING: Killing Bellissimo will make you miss out on the unique devil outfit which you only get when following the second solution to scare Bellissimo. For the purpose of this walkthrough, I went with the second solution to keep Bellissimo alive. It’s always better to not kill NPCs, just in case Bellissimo appears again in a future DLC (which are not yet released at the time of writing).

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Search Bellissimo’s room

For the other quest ending, you must enter Bellissimo’s room upstairs in the bathhouse. It’s a restricted area with a locked door. Trouble is, people are always walking around this area and bathmaids often sit on the bench in front of the locked door, so lockpicking isn’t practical. Easiest option is to pickpocket the key off Bellissimo himself while he sits in the garden during the day.

Just like with the method to kill him, you should first seek out Bellissimo in the garden across the street to the south-east of the bathhouse (at the very southern corner of Kuttenberg bordering the city walls). For me he appeared at 9:30AM, just skip time in 1-hour increments from 9AM onwards until he appears. He usually sits on the bench in the corner of the garden or stands in the little shed. Then make a save and pickpocket his pouch while he sits on the bench to loot his keys (he has two keys, loot both).

While in this garden, enter the shed on the side and loot the chest for List of Bellissimo’s Sins. Read it from the inventory, this will unlock 2 new dialogue options later to force Bellissimo to leave Kuttenberg. It reveals he committed adultery with a client’s wife, shat in a church, had intercourse with nuns, and vomited on a priest.

Now you can simply use the key on the locked bathhouse door and sneak upstairs. His room will be marked and there will be a / prompt when approaching the door. Inside Bellissimo’s room you must read the letter on the dresser.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Tell Voyta what you learned at the baths

After reading the letter, return to Voyta where the quest started. What dialogues you pick here doesn’t matter, Henry reports that Bellissimo got the job because he’s doing it for free, to get absolution for his sins from the priest. Voyta suggests scaring off Bellissimo by making him think the devil is after him. He wants Henry to dress up in a devil disguise and scare Bellissimo at night.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Gather items for the Devil diguise

To make the devil diguise you must grab a bascinet with a visor, 3 torches, and 5 eggs. These are all readily available at merchants in Kuttenberg. Ideally, you would already have these in your inventory (or your horse inventory), or in your personal chest next to your beds. If not, you need to buy them or keep playing the game until you find the items.

1. Get a bascinet with a visor

Enter the armorer directly next to Voyta’s house, 2 houses further west. He sells various bascinets (e.g. “Noble’s Bascinet”). These are very expensive, so alternatively you could steal one, ride away and pass time until your crime is forgotten. You also find various bascinets during story quests.

2. Obtain torches

Can buy them from general store traders. For example, the one next to Voyta’s house, 4 houses further west. For me he sold 2 torches but you should already have 1 in your inventory, if not check other general store traders or skip time until his inventory refreshes.

3. Collect eggs

Eggs can be bought from the Grocers in Kuttenberg, directly east of Voyta’s house.

After getting all these items, the quest marker “D” will appear on Voyta back at his house. Return to Voyta and tell him “I have the things for that devil costume”, deliver all items. Then you get the “Spooking Equipment” miscellaneous item. Exhaust the remaining question dialogues in any order.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Steal Bellissimo’s alcohol

Return to Bellissimo’s room in the bathhouse upstairs, which you searched earlier. You must loot all Schnapps from his bedside chest. If you pickpocketed his keys earlier as suggested, you can simply open the chest. If not, you must lockpick it (medium difficulty).

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Get Bellissimo drunk in the evening

Skip time until evening, after 22:00 will work. Then Bellissimo will be marked by the “I” objective marker, he should be downstairs in the bathhouse at the tables. Put on your finest clothes as it will help with some skill checks.

Talk to Bellissimo. There will be 3 skill checks in a row, it doesn’t matter which ones you pick or whether you succeed or fail. The outcome will always be the same: Bellissimo passes out from his drunkenness. Winning the skill checks only rewards reputation.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Take Bellissimo to his workshop

Pick up the passed-out Bellissimo and carry him to his yard across the street, south-east of the bathhouse. Drop him off anywhere in his shed, then a cutscene automatically starts.

IMPORTANT: Once you put down Bellissimo in his shed, it will overwrite your currently equipped outfit with the devil disguise. It’s recommended to memorize (or keep a screenshot) of your current outfit, so you will remember it later.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Scare Bellissimo

Bellissimo will wake up, and Henry dressed as the devil, will stand ready in front of his door.

Exhaust the first set of questions in any order to accuse him of his sins. If you looted and read List of Bellissimo’s Sins from his workshop chest, you get some additional lines of dialogue here with a golden icon. You can use the dialogue “You vomited on a priest!” or “You betrayed a friend!” which leads to guaranteed success. He then pleads he’ll do anything if you let him go – to which Henry will command him to leave Kuttenberg immediately. A scared Bellissimo will run off into the dark.

Winning the skill checks gives the same result. If you didn’t pick up List of Bellissimo’s Sins and fail the skill checks, then Bellissimo will realize you’re in a disguise. Then he will fight you, simply knock him out with bare hands. Then you get the same result and Bellissimo leaves Kuttenberg.

[Solution 2: Saving Bellissimo] Tell Voyta how you dealt with Bellissimo

Return to Voyta in his house where the quest started. Tell him you managed to scare Bellissimo off. He will offer the next 2 quests immediately:

  • “Do you need help with anything else?” -> Stained Honour quest
  • “I’d like to know about your past” -> Man Proposes quest

This finishes The Night-Mare quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Brushes with Death DLC.

Next up: Man Proposes
