Xiangqi, also known as Chinese chess, is a two-player strategy board game originating in ancient China. With a history spanning over 1,500 years, Xiangqi is widely played in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and among Chinese communities worldwide.

Gameplay

Xiangqi is played on a 9x10 board with 32 pieces, 16 for each player. The pieces are arranged in a specific formation, with each side having a king, two advisors, two elephants, two chariots, two cannons, two horses, and five pawns.

The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, a position where it is under attack and cannot escape. Players take turns moving their pieces according to specific rules, aiming to capture or threaten the opponent's pieces while protecting their own.

Piece Movements

Each type of piece has its unique movement pattern:

* King: Moves one square in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).

* Advisor: Moves one square diagonally, always remaining within the palace area (the 3x3 central square).

* Elephant: Moves two squares diagonally, jumping over the intervening square. It cannot cross the river (the 5th rank).

* Chariot: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

* Cannon: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically, but it must capture by "jumping" over another piece.

* Horse: Moves in an "L" pattern, two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. It can jump over other pieces.

* Pawn: Moves one square forward, except for its initial move where it can move two squares forward. Captures diagonally forward.

Special Rules

* River Boundary: The river divides the board into two halves. Chariots and cannons cannot cross the river, while elephants cannot leave their respective halves.

* Palace Area: The king and advisors cannot leave the palace area.

* Check and Checkmate: When the king is under attack, it is in check. The player in check must make a move to remove the threat or be checkmated.

* Stalemate: A stalemate occurs when a player has no legal moves, but their king is not in check.

Xiangqi requires a combination of strategic thinking, tactical maneuvers, and knowledge of the game's unique rules. Players must consider piece placement, control of key squares, and the development of their pieces to gain an advantage.
