Xiangqi Master - Chinese Chess

Xiangqi, also known as Chinese chess, is a two-player strategy board game played on a 9x10 board. It is one of the most popular board games in the world, with an estimated 200 million players.

The game is played with 32 pieces, each with its own unique movement rules. The pieces are divided into two sides: Red and Black. The Red side moves first.

The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's general. Checkmate occurs when the general is under attack and cannot escape capture.

Xiangqi is a complex and challenging game that requires strategic thinking and tactical skill. It is a popular game for all ages and skill levels.

History of Xiangqi

The origins of Xiangqi are unknown, but it is believed to have originated in China around the 6th century AD. The game was originally played on a 8x8 board, but it was later expanded to a 9x10 board.

Xiangqi became popular in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). The game was often played in the imperial court, and it was even used as a training tool for military strategists.

Xiangqi was introduced to Japan in the 9th century AD, and it quickly became popular there. The game is also played in Korea, Vietnam, and other parts of Asia.

Rules of Xiangqi

The Xiangqi board is divided into nine horizontal lines and ten vertical lines. The board is divided into two halves by a river that runs across the center of the board.

Each player has 16 pieces:

* 1 General

* 2 Advisors

* 2 Elephants

* 2 Chariots

* 2 Horses

* 5 Soldiers

The pieces are arranged on the board as follows:

```
```

The game begins with Red moving first. Players take turns moving one piece at a time. Pieces can only move to empty squares or squares occupied by an opponent's piece.

The following are the movement rules for each piece:

* General: The general can move one square horizontally or vertically.

* Advisor: The advisor can move one square diagonally. It cannot cross the river.

* Elephant: The elephant can move two squares diagonally. It cannot cross the river.

* Chariot: The chariot can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

* Horse: The horse moves in an "L" pattern - two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. The horse can jump over other pieces.

* Soldier: The soldier can move one square forward. It cannot move backward or sideways.
