Board and Pieces

The game is played on a 9x10 board divided into 90 squares. Each player has 16 pieces:

Objective

The objective of the game is to capture the opponent's General. The game ends when one player's General is captured or when a player has no legal moves.

Movement Rules

Each type of piece has its own unique movement rules:

* General: Moves one square horizontally or vertically, but cannot leave the 3x3 central area of the board.

* Advisors: Move one square diagonally, staying within the 3x3 central area.

* Elephants: Move two squares diagonally, jumping over an intervening piece. They cannot cross the river (the fifth rank of the board).

* Chariots: Move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.

* Horses: Move in an "L" pattern - two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly. They can jump over other pieces.

* Cannons: Move any number of squares horizontally or vertically, but must jump over an intervening piece to capture.

* Soldiers: Move one square forward, or one square sideways if they have crossed the river.

Special Rules

* Palace: The 3x3 central area of the board where the General and Advisors move.

* River: The fifth rank of the board, which Elephants cannot cross.

* Check: When the General is under attack by an opponent's piece.

* Checkmate: When the General is in check and there is no legal move to escape.

Gameplay

Players take turns moving one piece at a time. The game typically begins with the Red player (the player with the pieces facing south) making the first move. Players can move any of their pieces that is not blocked by an opponent's piece.

If a piece lands on a square occupied by an opponent's piece, it captures that piece and removes it from the board. The game continues until one player captures the opponent's General or until a player has no legal moves.
