Zolo, also known as "Call Break," is a thrilling trick-taking card game that combines strategy, skill, and a touch of luck. It is widely played in South Asia, particularly in Nepal and India, and has gained immense popularity due to its engaging gameplay and social appeal.

Gameplay

Zolo is played with a standard deck of 52 cards, with four players forming two partnerships. The objective of the game is to take the highest number of tricks, with each trick consisting of four cards, one from each player.

At the start of each round, the dealer shuffles the deck and deals 13 cards to each player. The player to the left of the dealer leads with any card, and the other players must follow suit if possible. If a player cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a trump card.

The trump suit is determined at the beginning of each round by the player who makes the highest bid. The player with the highest bid chooses the trump suit, and all cards of that suit become the most powerful.

Bidding

Before the first trick, each player makes a bid, which indicates the number of tricks they believe their partnership can take. The minimum bid is 1, and the maximum bid is 13. The player with the highest bid becomes the "caller."

If a partnership takes exactly the number of tricks they bid, they earn 10 points for each trick. If they take more tricks than they bid, they earn 20 points for each additional trick. However, if they take fewer tricks than they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they missed.

Special Rules

Zolo features several special rules that add to its complexity and excitement:

* No Blind Bidding: Players cannot bid without first looking at their cards.

* Call Break: If a player believes their partnership cannot take any tricks, they can declare a "call break." If they are successful, they earn 20 points. If they fail, they lose 20 points.

* Blind Nil: If a player believes their partnership cannot take any tricks, they can declare a "blind nil" without looking at their cards. If they are successful, they earn 40 points. If they fail, they lose 40 points.

Scoring

The game is typically played over several rounds, with the partnership with the highest total score at the end of the game declared the winner. The first partnership to reach a predetermined score, such as 251 or 501, also wins the game.
