Introduction:

Hearts is a classic trick-taking card game for four players, played with a standard 52-card deck. It is known for its unique penalty system, where players aim to avoid taking heart cards and the dreaded Queen of Spades.

Objective:

The goal of Hearts is to be the player with the lowest total score at the end of multiple rounds. Points are accumulated by taking penalty cards, while avoiding them reduces the score.

Setup:

* Each player is dealt 13 cards.

* The remaining cards form a draw pile.

Gameplay:

* The player to the left of the dealer leads with any card.

* Players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot, they may play any card, including a heart or the Queen of Spades.

* The highest card of the suit led wins the trick.

* The winner of the trick leads the next card.

Penalty Cards:

* Hearts: Each heart card taken counts as one penalty point.

* Queen of Spades: The Queen of Spades is the most penalized card, counting as 13 penalty points.

Scoring:

* At the end of each round, players tally their penalty points.

* The player with the lowest score receives no points.

* The player with the highest score receives the sum of all other players' scores.

Shooting the Moon:

* If a player takes all 13 hearts and the Queen of Spades in a single round, they "shoot the moon" and receive a score of -26 points.

* If they fail to shoot the moon, they receive 26 penalty points.

Variations:

* Pass the Trash: Players pass three cards to the player on their left before the first trick.

* Black Maria: The 2 of Clubs is treated as a penalty card, worth one point.

* Blind Nil: Players bid on how many penalty points they will take before the game starts, without looking at their cards.
