Overview

Spite & Malice is a classic card game for two to four players that combines strategy, luck, and a dash of spite. The objective of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards by building sequences and sets.

Setup

The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. Each player is dealt a hand of seven cards. The remaining cards form the draw pile. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile.

Gameplay

Players take turns clockwise. On their turn, a player can do one of three things:

1. Play a Card: If the player has a card that matches the rank or suit of the top card on the discard pile, they can play it on top.

2. Draw a Card: If the player cannot play a card, they must draw a card from the draw pile.

3. Discard a Card: If the player has a card that does not match the top card on the discard pile, they can discard it.

Building Sequences and Sets

Players can build sequences of three or more cards in ascending or descending order, regardless of suit. They can also build sets of three or four cards of the same rank.

Spite

The game's name comes from the "spite" rule. If a player has a card that matches the rank or suit of the top card on the discard pile, they can choose not to play it. Instead, they can force the next player to draw a card.

Malice

The "malice" rule allows players to play a card on top of the discard pile that does not match the rank or suit. However, they must then draw two cards as a penalty.

Winning

The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game. If the draw pile runs out before a player wins, the player with the fewest cards left in their hand wins.

Strategy

Spite & Malice requires a combination of strategy and luck. Players should try to build sequences and sets as quickly as possible while also blocking their opponents. The spite and malice rules can be used to force opponents to draw cards and slow them down.

Variations

There are many variations of Spite & Malice, including:

* Cutthroat: Players can play any card on top of the discard pile, regardless of rank or suit.

* No Draw: Players cannot draw cards from the draw pile.

* Double Spite: Players can force the next player to draw two cards by not playing a matching card.
