Overview

Mau is a trick-taking card game for 4 or 6 players, played with a standard deck of 52 cards. The goal of the game is to be the first player or team to reach a predetermined number of points (typically 500 or 1000).

Gameplay

1. Dealing: The deck is shuffled and 13 cards are dealt to each player.

2. Bidding: Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player bids on the number of tricks they believe they can take. The minimum bid is 1 trick, and the maximum bid is 13 tricks.

3. Trump Suit: The player who bids the highest number of tricks chooses the trump suit.

4. Playing: The player to the left of the dealer leads with any card. Other players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including a trump card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, unless a trump card is played, in which case the highest trump card wins.

5. Scoring: The player or team who takes the number of tricks they bid receives 10 points for each trick. If they fail to take the number of tricks they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they missed.

6. Mau: If a player takes all 13 tricks in a hand, they score a "Mau" and receive 250 points.

7. Winning: The game continues until a player or team reaches the predetermined number of points.

Special Rules

* Overbidding: If a player or team fails to take the number of tricks they bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they missed, and the other players or teams split the points they bid.

* Nil: A player may bid "Nil" if they believe they will not take any tricks. If they are successful, they receive 100 points. If they take any tricks, they lose 100 points.

* Blind Nil: A player may bid "Blind Nil" without looking at their cards. If they are successful, they receive 200 points. If they take any tricks, they lose 200 points.

* Reneging: If a player fails to follow suit when they are able to, they lose 10 points and the other players or teams split the points they bid.
