Scopa, meaning "broom" in Italian, is a classic trick-taking card game originating in Italy. It is played with a standard Italian deck of 40 cards, known as a "napoletana deck." The game's objective is to capture the most cards and form specific combinations to score points.
Gameplay
Scopa is played by two to four players, with two-player games being the most common. The game consists of several rounds, each with the following steps:
1. Dealing: The dealer shuffles the deck and deals three cards to each player. The remaining cards are placed face down in a central pile known as the "monte."
2. Bidding: Starting with the player to the left of the dealer, each player bids on the number of cards they believe they can capture during the round. The minimum bid is zero, and the maximum bid is equal to the number of cards in the player's hand plus the number of cards in the monte.
3. Playing: The player with the highest bid plays a card from their hand face up on the table. The next player must then play a card that either matches the suit of the first card or captures it. A card can be captured by playing a card of the same suit with a higher value.
4. Scoring: When a player captures a card, they place it face down in a pile in front of them. Additionally, if the player captures all four cards of a suit, they have made a "scopa" and earn an extra point.
5. Monte: If a player cannot play a card, they must draw a card from the monte. If the monte is empty, the player skips their turn.
6. End of Round: The round ends when all cards have been captured or there are no more cards in the monte. The player with the most cards captured wins the round and receives a number of points equal to the difference between their bid and the number of cards they actually captured.
Special Combinations
In addition to scopas, there are two other special combinations that can be made:
1. Primiera: Capturing the seven of hearts, seven of diamonds, and ace of hearts.
2. Settebello: Capturing all seven cards of the same suit.
Winning
The game continues for multiple rounds until a predetermined number of points is reached. The player with the highest total score at the end of the game wins.
Variations
There are numerous variations of Scopa, each with its own unique rules and scoring system. Some popular variations include:
1. Scopone Scientifico: A more complex version of Scopa played with a deck of 52 cards.
2. Scopa d'Assi: A variation where only aces can be used to capture cards.
3. Scopa Romana: A version played with a deck of 48 cards and different scoring rules.
