Mafia The Old Country features a linear story and an open world free-roam mode, known as Free Drive. This mode is a bit hidden. Here’s how to access it:
How to Unlock & Access Free Roam
Free Roam is unlocked during Chapter 3. It’s then accessed under Title Screen > Carcyclopedia > Drive.
What to do in Free Roam Mode
The main use of free roam is that you’re able to explore the whole map and use all vehicles/horses. In this mode you can also find the open world collectibles that aren’t reachable during the story.
Difference Between Story Mode & Free Roam Mode
The key difference from story mode is that the story forces you to remain within the bounds of main objectives.
In Free Roam mode you can fully explore the entire map as you like, and there’s also fast travel to the locations marked on the map. Story mode doesn’t have the fast travel function.
You can also reach many otherwise unreachable collectibles in free-roam. Likewise, there are some collectibles that are exclusive to story mode. When scrolling over the collectible icons on the map, the story-exclusive ones will have a yellow icon and will show in what chapter they are found. This makes it easier to track down missing items. All collectible progress is shared between both game modes. If you find it in one mode it counts as collected in the other mode too. The collectibles get marked on the map when going near them, and the ones you got marked in story mode will remain marked in open world free roam. It’s best to play through the story first to unlock all game features, then clean up collectibles in free roam. If you missed any story collectibles you can grab them through Chapter Replay at any time, hence nothing is missable.
