Finding Grounded 2’s acorn shells and acorn tops is one of the first big challenges in Obsidian’s survival game. Tracking them down takes you further afield than you’ve likely been so far, and you’re not alone. Some of Grounded 2’s biggest early-game threats are lurking in the grass.

Below, we explain where to find acorn shells and acorn tops in Grounded 2 and what to expect on the journey.

Where to find acorn shells and acorn tops in Grounded 2

Acorns are, of course, where acorn shells and acorn tops come from, but Grounded 2 gives you little indication of where to find them. You’ve got a few choices. The first, which is likely close to where you are at this point in the game, is on a ridge above the tunnel you entered to access the Ominent training facility, the one with all the gnats flying outside.

It’s not the safest of areas to explore, so make sure you equip whatever armor you have and bring a pebblet hammer as a weapon, though adding a bow and arrows is a good idea, too. The two biggest threats you’ll face are Larva (the giant, deadly versions, not the grub-like kind) and Orb Weaver Jrs (the latter of which is Grounded’s twee name for medium-sized spiders), and both are prone to being stunned from a hammer combo or charged attack.

You’ll need the Omni-Tool’s basic hammer function to bust an acorn and harvest its pieces, so if you run across an acorn before getting that tool, you can’t get a head start.

If you don’t get what you need from these nearby acorns, look south of the snackbar toward the area’s giant oak tree, the progenitor of all acorns. You’ll find several more scattered around the tree roots, and you don’t have to get too close before they start showing up. There’s a giant, spiked caterpillar roaming around, but if you leave it alone, it won’t bother you. Orb Weaver Jrs patrol the area’s perimeter as well, so you may still catch the attention of a stray spider or two.

Wherever you look, you might want to save before breaking the acorn so you can re-load and try again. In our experience, the number of pieces that come from an acorn varies. For example, it took three acorns before we ended up with an acorn top, though whether that’s because the drops are random or because pieces flew off and got lost in the undergrowth (the acorn breaks in dramatic fashion), we’re not sure. Either way, not every part of the acorn — like when you gather grass seeds — is one you can collect when it breaks.

Acorns seem to respawn after a couple of in-game days. You won’t have to go without for long if you don’t get what you need the first time, but reloading to before you broke the acorn saves you the hassle of having to wait.
