Portrait in Red is the 4th DLC quest in the Brushes With Death expansion of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the Portrait in Red DLC quest.

  • Starting Location: Trosky Region > Trosky Castle
  • Quest Giver: Master Voyta (Enigmatic Painter)
  • Requirement: Own Brushes With Death DLC and finished Chiaroscuro
  • Reward:  Vengeance Solves Nothing (if you let Burkhard alive)
  • Quest Type: Side Quest
  • Quest Description: The painter Voyta is deeply troubled, and it seems that a killer by the name of Burkhard, who recently arrived here, is the cause. He murders people in a brutal manner, and considering that there is a bounty on his head from the Bailiff of Troskowitz, Thrush, it’s worth my while to go and deal with him. Perhaps that way, I can finally get some important answers from Voyta.
  • DLC Required: Brushes With Death

Starting Location: Portrait in Red

After the previous quest Chiaroscuro, skip time until the next morning and talk to the painter again in Trosky Castle.

Exhaust all dialogues: “Who do you want to fight?” > “What kind of person is Burkhard?” > “Why do you want to get rid of him now?” > “You can trust me” (Speech Skill Check – if it succeeds he will confess that he has been hearing voices in his head telling him to kill Burkhard, and the shrine/egg hunt were to distract his mind) > “What did you do at the shrine?” > “What was the egg for?” > “You’ve lied to me all this time!” > “You’ll go to hell for this” > “What exactly is your plan?” > “How do you know Burkhard?” > “Couldn’t this be resolved differently?” > “Try to let it go” > “Yes, I’ll do it quietly” > “How will I recognise Burkhard?” > “Who posted the bounty on Burkhard?” > “Does Burkhard have any cronies?” > “How do you know all this?” > “I’ll try not to hurt them” > “I know everything now”.

Kill Burkhard

Missable Trophy/Achievement:  Vengeance Solves Nothing (You let Burkhard live)

Go to the waypoint in the woods north-east of Trosky Castle. Burkhard and his gang are in the middle of the search area, exactly where the “A” objective letter is on the map. Make a save before going there.

For the trophy, you have to steal his helmet without killing him. Skip time until 2:00AM, Burkhard and his bandits will be asleep. Sneak into the middle of his camp, lockpick the medium-difficulty chest and loot “Killer’s Helmet”:

Having the Thievery Skill “Silent Fiddler” is helpful so you don’t make noise while lockpicking. Also wear dark light-weight clothes to remain unnoticed.

Now return to the painter in Trosky Castle where the quest started (skip time until next morning when he’s awake). You have to lie to him and say “I’ve got Burkhard’s helmet” > “Yes he’s dead (Lie)” (Speech Skill Check). If you win the skill check, the quest will complete and  Vengeance Solves Nothing unlocks. If you don’t have sufficient speech stat, you have to spend time leveling it up or buy other skills that increase speech before you can earn this trophy.

Afterward, exhaust all questions with the painter: “Will you finally answer a few questions for me?” > “What’s your real name?” > “Where did you get that skull of yours?” > “Why were you tied to that tree?” > “Where did you hear about that shrine?” > “How did you know Burkhard?” > “What if I want my shield painted again?” > “Alright, I’ll meet you in Kuttenberg”.

Alternate outcomes:

  • If you approach the bandit camp at day, you can talk to Burkhard. If you win the skill checks with him, you can fight him in an honorable duel one against one. When you beat him, his gang runs away automatically. Even if you knock him out by non-lethal means he will die automatically which voids the trophy.
  • If you rush into his camp, or fail the skill checks with Burkhard, you will be attacked by his whole gang. You only need to defeat Burkhard and everyone else will run away immediately.
  • You can stealth-kill or knock out Burkhard at night while he sleeps in the camp. However, even if you knock him out in his sleep it counts as killing him and voids the trophy.

This finishes Portrait in Red quest in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Brushes with Death DLC.
