How to understand the mechanics of the maze
Once you enter the maze, there are two ways to interact with it.
In the center of the maze is the central observation square. Here you can rotate the innermost blue circle to rearrange the open path.
On the west side of the maze is the Western Watchtower. From here, you can rotate the outer red circle. The area containing the second watchtower has two entrances, so you'll need to perform a series of rotations at both towers to open the way to the exit.
The exit of the maze is located in the fountain square on the east side of the maze, just above the entrance. Your first stop will be the Central Observation Square.
The maze is filled with enemies that can slow down your progress and make you forget the direction you're trying to go. If you get frustrated by being interrupted, don't hesitate to run away from the fight.
Once you enter the maze, you should follow the path clockwise. You'll soon exit the maze, following a path that leads southwest. Continue following this detour clockwise, descending and then ascending the stairs until you soon re-enter the maze via the southernmost entrance.
Once back in the maze, immediately turn right and follow the path clockwise. At the end of the path you'll find an opening leading to the next inner circle. Continue moving counterclockwise until you see an opening in the red wall, allowing you to enter the next circle near the center.
Continue going counter-clockwise through the exit on the left, then immediately go back and walk clockwise. You'll see an opening in the blue wall that leads to the central observation plaza.
How to operate the rotating island maze
Once inside the central observation plaza, you'll see a blue wall switch that can be activated with a hammer. If you press it, the blue wall will rotate 45 degrees counterclockwise, but unfortunately, rearranging the maze from this angle is difficult.
Here you should press L to have Louie stand in front of the switch, then walk to the top of the tower to get a full view of the maze. When you're ready to hit the switch and rotate the blue wall, press Y and Louie will hit the switch with his hammer.
The first NPC you encounter in the central lookout square will tell you that following the red flag will help you find your way to the maze. Keep this in mind as you move forward.
Your next destination is the Western Watchtower. When you look at the blue circle, you'll see two blocked green doors and two open paths. To reach the Western Watchtower, you need to line up the two open paths facing left with the two green doors facing right.
In other words, looking at the maze like a clock, the open doors should be at eight and ten o'clock, while the green doors should be at two and four o'clock.
Your exit to the Western Watchtower is the exit in the lower left corner. Look southwest of the tower for the red flag.
The path to the Western Watchtower is easily visible from the central tower. Exit through the southwest entrance through the blue wall, then follow the red wall clockwise until you reach an exit. You then walk counterclockwise again until you reach a red flag, then exit to the outer ring. You'll immediately see the exit to the Western Watchtower on your left.
How to rotate the red wall of the Western Watchtower
After a cutscene, you will be able to enter the Western Watchtower. Just like before, use the L key to assign Luigi to the button, then climb the tower to get a better view of the maze.
Your goal is to rotate the red circle to align the path with the Fountain Square exit on the east side. Like the blue circle, the red circle has two open doors and two closed green doors.
To exit the maze, you need to rotate the red circle until the open doors are on the northeast and southwest sides of the circle, and the green doors are on the northwest and southeast. In other words, there should be an open gap in the upper right corner of the circle, not a green door.
You can't walk all the way from the Western Watchtower to Fountain Square on the east side, so don't worry.
You need to return to the central watchtower and then take another spin to exit the maze.
Once the maze is lined up like in the picture above, you can climb down the tower and rejoin Louie. From here, exit through the exit closest to the tower and walk counter-clockwise along the red wall. When you reach the exit, head directly behind the central watchtower.
There are many optional items to collect in the maze.
Although this guide doesn't cover these extra items, as you exit the Western Watchtower, you can immediately turn right into the alcove to obtain a pair of item boxes.
How to rotate the maze from the central watchtower
Once back at the central watchtower, you only need to take one more spin. All you have to do is have one of the openings in the blue circle be to the northwest or upper right. This will create a winding path between the central observation tower and the fountain square on the right.
From the switch, go to the gap in the blue wall and walk clockwise until you see the exit with the red flag. From here, walk counter-clockwise along the red wall until you can pass its exit, then continue walking clockwise to the next exit with a red flag. The next exit ahead of you will lead to a fountain.
You've almost made it out of the maze and completed your Spin Island adventure. After the scene, exit north from Fountain Square and follow the path to an exit on your right (there will be an item box if you take the left path). This exit is the real exit of the maze, where the peach and the lighthouse are.
