Natural gas is a resource best used when energy is low, or at the colony furnace.
Because it has almost no effect on the energy tower in the main city (the oil tower is even less useful), and if the adaptive tower focuses on natural gas, it often needs coal to make up for the loss, and it is even worse than burning coal.
So if the main city does not produce that much natural gas, it can at best be used as a last resort for fuel shortages to ensure that you have something to burn. But for colonial furnaces without oil, (because the calorific value of the two is about the same and oil always generates more heat than the others) natural gas can be used together with coal to effectively reduce the demand for coal.
