Age of Mythology: Retold is now out for everyone, including those who play on consoles. Specifically, players on Xbox Series X|S can enjoy the RTS strategy game for the first time along with PC players. But can the two platforms mix and match and play together through crossplay? We’re here to find out.
Can you play Age of Mythology: Retold with crossplay?
Yes, there is full crossplay support for Age of Mythology: Retold between PC and Xbox Series X|S players. This, of course, relates to online multiplayer matches between players on both platforms. You can freely join a lobby and play with anyone, no matter if they’re on a computer or on the console.
The crossplay setting is automatically enabled on both Xbox and Steam when you install the game.
That could raise the question of how will console players handle micro, compared to players with a keyboard and mouse setup. We’ll have to see to be sure, but as we’ve experienced the Villager automation queue option, there are other controller features to help them out. There are many options to fine-tune controller settings, for example, magnetic unit snapping, screen panning calibration, and more. It will take some time to get used to, but strategy gaming is entirely viable with a controller.
The crossplay setting is automatically enabled on both Xbox and Steam when you install the game. Interestingly, you can only turn off crossplay partially on the Microsoft Store version of the game. This will block off Steam players while keeping Xbox players still available. Meanwhile, there is no option to turn off crossplay in the Steam version of the game.
That could make some very competitive lobbies more punishing for console players, but we will have to see how the meta develops to find out. Playing with controller can be seen as a disadvantage compared to mouse and keyboard. However, time will tell how many console players will be able to compete on the ladder.
