The knife is a high-risk high-reward weapon in Call of Duty Black Ops 6. If you can sneak up on your opponent, you can take them down instantly, but it does leave you exposed to gunfire without a means to defend yourself in time due to the relatively quick time-to-kill.

Over the next two weekends as the Black Ops 6 beta is live, now is a perfect opportunity to get used to using the knife ahead of the game’s release on October 25th.

The Knife is a long-standing weapon in the Call of Duty franchise dating all the way back to 2007’s Modern Warfare. There hasn’t been a set standard as to when the Knife is unlocked, with some games such as Infinite Warfare requiring players to reach all the way to level 37 to be able to use the Combat Knife. Thankfully, that isn’t the case with Black Ops 6 as the Knife is unlocked at level 1 and is useable even in the default loadouts, Enforcer, Recon, Strategist, Command, and Overwatch.

To use the Knife, you need to hold your Melee button, which is set as V by default on keyboard or R3/RS on your controller, this will then equip your Knife and you will carry it instead of your gun. To use the Knife, press your fire button, which is Mouse 1 and R2/RT by default. If you are able to get close enough to your opponent to land a strike, it will be a one-hit kill. You will also be able to perform a Finishing Move if you are behind your opponent too, which is a more flashy death animation.

You must equip your knife to use it, otherwise you will melee attack with the butt of your gun.

Like other weapons in Black Ops 6, you can use the Gunsmith option on the Knife. However, this only allows you to attach cosmetics such as casmos, charms, decals, and stickers to the knife. As the Knife is a one-hit kill there isn’t any way you could improve it.

Black Ops 6 has so far been a huge hit with players, with some calling it the “best Call of Duty since Black Ops 3.” The beta will run for the next two weekends, with players who have pre-ordered the game or have an active Xbox Game Pass subscription being able to play between August 30th and September 4th, followed by all players the following weekend from September 6th to 9th.
