Slicing is a hacking mini game that essentially boils down to finding the right glyphs combination through a process of elimination. It typically shows up when you want to access computers, terminals, consoles, and the like, to unlock encrypted files, especially during story quests and in restricted areas. Though there’s a decent tutorial that lays out the basics, it’s not all that clear what to do once you dive into the game itself.

How slicing works in Star Wars Outlaws
When you load up the mini game, you’re presented with a set of eight glyphs along with a grid made up of rows with three columns. The idea is to line up the right succession of symbols in a row within the allotted time limit. You can also change the glyphs to numbers if that makes it easier to track them.
When complete each row, the glyphs will light up as follows:
- Red cross – the glyph isn’t part of the combination, so is discarded from the pool of glyphs and can’t be used in the next row
- Yellow dot – the glyph is part of the combination, but in the wrong position in the row.
- Teal dot – the glyph is part of the combination and in the correct position. It’ll stay in that position for the next row.

You want to work methodically through the glyphs to stay on top of things. Start with the first three glyphs and work your way through them until you get either teal or yellow dots. From there, shift the yellow glyphs to different slots in the row until they turn teal. To complete the slicing mini game, you’ll need to have three teal glyphs, or in other words, the right combination.

For example, let’s take the slicing game in the image above. The first row has three red glyphs, meaning none of them are in the combination. On the next row, the third glyph is yellow so it’s in the combination just not in that third slot in the row. In the third row, all three glyphs are yellow, telling us that we’ve found the right glyphs but need to reorder them. And, in the final row, all three glyphs are teal meaning they are the right glyphs in the right positions.
Slicing can seem a bit obtuse at first but after a few runs, you’ll get the hang of it and quickly solve the combinations. The time limit is also pretty generous in most cases so don’t worry too much about solving it too fast.
