How to explore Black Myth Wukong

To play Black Myth Wukong without a map, you will need to understand how the game works.

For the most part, the game is split into chapters, with each chapter represented in the main travel fast travel menu category.  For example, the forest area is Chapter 1, with the desert is Chapter 2. Chapter 3 contains the snowy mountain, and the fourth is the swamp area. And so on.

When you click on this, you’ll find the names of the major areas in each chapter. This then breaks down into wayshrines. Most of these areas are in a chapter are main story related, as the game is often structured in a linear way.

In some chapters, such as Chapter 2 and Chapter 3, some shrines are optional areas that lead to explorable locations. One example is the Rock Crash wayshrine, as you can use that to do a secret Buddha boss, alongside the Fright Cliffs area that contains some hidden NPC questlines and some optional bosses. This is the only time that the games goes non-linear in that regard.

In other instances, there are secret and missable alcoves, rooms, or other things that unlock as you do things. You may need to check your pathways before progressing to ensure you don’t miss secret areas with missable rewards like drinks, soaks, or treasure chests on random rocks. Part of the game’s exploration is double-checking your linear areas for small areas you might miss. This is the case for NPCS to ensure you speak to them as they run around between areas. Sometimes they go further into the chapter’s regions, other times they go back to places you’ve already been.

Typically if you need to pay attention to detail, there’s enough detail in NPC dialogue to tell you where you need to go. Most POIs have a wayshrine near them. If you need more info on a map name, then you can check the meditation spots in the journal for more info on the area.

Speaking of which, resting at meditation sites will give you a preview of the nearby area. The cinematic will give you panning shots of the area to help reveal more of the Black Myth Wukong map for more context to your surroundings. Typically the areas are beauty landmarks, others point to areas you can go to or interact with.
