The raster display ensures a fast performance of the application even if there is a very high thunderstorm activity. Blitzortung.org participants can visualize all stroke locations individually.

Blitzortung Lightning Monitor is an advanced lightning detection and tracking system that provides real-time information on lightning strikes worldwide. It utilizes a network of sensors strategically placed across the globe to detect and triangulate lightning events, offering a comprehensive and accurate picture of lightning activity.

Detection and Triangulation

Blitzortung's sensor network consists of over 100 sensors, primarily located in Europe, but with additional coverage in other regions. These sensors detect the electromagnetic pulses emitted by lightning strikes and use advanced algorithms to triangulate the exact location of each strike. The system can detect both cloud-to-cloud (intracloud) and cloud-to-ground (cloud-to-ground) lightning strikes.

Real-Time Monitoring

Blitzortung provides real-time monitoring of lightning activity on an interactive map. The map displays the location of each detected strike as a point marker, color-coded according to the time of occurrence. Users can zoom in and out to view lightning activity at different scales, from a global overview to a detailed view of a specific region.

Strike Information

For each detected strike, Blitzortung provides detailed information, including the exact location (latitude and longitude), time of occurrence, and peak current (kA). The system also estimates the distance to the nearest populated area, providing valuable information for situational awareness.
