Tamil Calendar

The Tamil Calendar is a lunisolar calendar used by Tamil people in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is based on the movement of the Sun and the Moon and is closely tied to the agricultural cycle.

Structure of the Tamil Calendar

The Tamil Calendar is divided into 12 months, each of which is named after a constellation. The months are:

* Chithirai (April-May)

* Vaikasi (May-June)

* Aani (June-July)

* Aadi (July-August)

* Aavani (August-September)

* Purattasi (September-October)

* Aippasi (October-November)

* Karthikai (November-December)

* Margazhi (December-January)

* Thai (January-February)

* Maasi (February-March)

* Panguni (March-April)

Each month is divided into two fortnights, the waxing fortnight (Sukla Paksha) and the waning fortnight (Krishna Paksha). The waxing fortnight begins on the new moon and ends on the full moon, while the waning fortnight begins on the full moon and ends on the new moon.

Days of the Week

The Tamil Calendar has seven days of the week, each of which is named after a planet:

* Sunday (Gnayiru Kilamai) - Sun

* Monday (Thingal Kilamai) - Moon

* Tuesday (Sevvai Kilamai) - Mars

* Wednesday (Budhan Kilamai) - Mercury

* Thursday (Velli Kilamai) - Jupiter

* Friday (Sukkira Kilamai) - Venus

* Saturday (Sani Kilamai) - Saturn

Years

The Tamil Calendar uses a 60-year cycle, with each year being named after a combination of a number and an animal. The 60-year cycle is divided into two halves, the first half being called the Ilavarasan cycle and the second half being called the Thiravarasan cycle.

Festivals and Holidays

The Tamil Calendar is marked by a number of festivals and holidays, including:

* Pongal (January-February) - A harvest festival

* Tamil New Year (April-May) - The first day of the Tamil year

* Deepavali (October-November) - A festival of lights

* Karthigai Deepam (November-December) - A festival of lights

* Pongal (January-February) - A harvest festival

* Maasi Magam (February-March) - A festival dedicated to Lord Shiva

* Panguni Uthiram (March-April) - A festival dedicated to Lord Murugan
