Tlajoapp, also known as the Mesoamerican ballgame, was a ritualistic sport played by ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica, primarily in the Olmec, Maya, and Aztec cultures. It held immense cultural, religious, and political significance, and its origins can be traced back to as early as 1600 BCE.

Gameplay

Tlajoapp was played on a rectangular court with sloped sides and two stone rings fixed high on the walls. The goal was to propel a heavy rubber ball through the rings using only hips, elbows, and knees. The ball, known as a tlachtli, weighed several kilograms and was made from the sap of the rubber tree.

Rules and Scoring

The exact rules of Tlajoapp varied depending on the region and time period. However, some common elements included:

* Use of only hips, elbows, and knees to strike the ball

* Scoring points by passing the ball through the rings

* Forfeiting if the ball touched the ground or went out of bounds

Cultural Significance

Tlajoapp often involved ritualistic practices and sacrifices. The players were considered sacred and were sometimes adorned with elaborate costumes. Human sacrifice was also associated with the game, with the losing team or the captain often being sacrificed to honor the gods.

Archaeological Evidence

Archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous Tlajoapp courts throughout Mesoamerica. The largest and most impressive court is located at Chichen Itza, the ancient Maya city in Mexico. The court is 168 meters long and 70 meters wide, with stone rings placed at a height of 6 meters.

Decline and Legacy

Tlajoapp continued to be played until the Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica in the 16th century. The Spanish missionaries banned the game as pagan and associated it with human sacrifice. However, the legacy of Tlajoapp lives on in the modern-day sports of Ulama and Pok-ta-pok, which are played in Mexico and Central America.
