Equicity: A Game of Urban Planning and Economic StrategyEquicity is a board game for 2-4 players, designed by Phil Eklund and Chris Cole. It simulates the challenges of urban planning and economic development in a growing city. Players take on the roles of developers, competing to build the most prosperous and sustainable city while balancing the needs of residents, businesses, and the environment.
Gameplay:
The game is played on a hexagonal map representing the city. Each player starts with a limited amount of money and resources. On their turn, players can take various actions, such as:
* Purchasing Land: Players can buy vacant land to develop.
* Building Zones: Players can designate different zones on their land, such as residential, commercial, or industrial.
* Constructing Buildings: Players can build various buildings within their zones, including houses, factories, schools, and parks.
* Investing in Infrastructure: Players can improve their city's infrastructure by building roads, bridges, and utilities.
* Managing Resources: Players must carefully manage their resources, including money, population, and energy.
City Development:
As players develop their cities, they must consider the needs of different stakeholders:
* Residents: Residents require housing, jobs, and access to services such as education and healthcare.
* Businesses: Businesses need access to land, labor, and infrastructure to thrive.
* Environment: Players must balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, managing pollution and resource consumption.
Economic Competition:
Players compete to earn the most money and build the most prosperous city. They can do this by:
* Generating Revenue: Buildings generate income based on their type and location.
* Attracting Residents: Residential zones attract residents, who provide labor for businesses.
* Developing Industries: Industrial zones produce goods and services, which can be sold to generate revenue.
* Investing Wisely: Players must make strategic decisions about where to invest their resources to maximize their profits.
Endgame:
The game ends when all available land has been developed. Players then tally their scores based on their city's prosperity, sustainability, and population growth. The player with the highest score wins the game.
Key Features:
* Urban Planning Simulation: Equicity offers a realistic simulation of urban planning, with players balancing economic growth, resident needs, and environmental sustainability.
* Economic Strategy: Players must make strategic decisions about resource allocation, infrastructure investment, and business development to maximize their profits.
* Competition and Cooperation: While players compete to build the most prosperous city, they can also cooperate to improve the overall infrastructure and environment.
* Replayability: With a modular map and multiple development strategies, Equicity offers a high level of replayability.
