KUTV, virtual channel 2, is a CBS-affiliated television station licensed to Salt Lake City, Utah, United States. Owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, it is part of a duopoly with CW affiliate KUCW (channel 30). Both stations share studios on West Temple Street in downtown Salt Lake City, and KUTV's transmitter is located on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains.

History

KUTV began broadcasting on December 18, 1954, as KTVT. It was the second television station in Utah, after KSL-TV (channel 5). The station was originally owned by the Tribune Publishing Company, which also owned The Salt Lake Tribune newspaper. In 1972, KTVT was sold to Bonneville International, which changed the station's call letters to KUTV.

KUTV has been affiliated with CBS since its inception. However, the station has also carried programming from other networks, including NBC, ABC, and Fox. In 1995, KUTV became the flagship station of the Utah Jazz NBA team.

Programming

KUTV's programming schedule consists of a mix of local news, syndicated programming, and CBS network shows. The station's local newscasts are produced from its studios in downtown Salt Lake City. KUTV also produces a number of local sports programs, including "SportsBeat" and "The Locker Room."

Technical Information

KUTV broadcasts on VHF channel 2 with an effective radiated power of 100 kW. The station's transmitter is located on Farnsworth Peak in the Oquirrh Mountains. KUTV's signal can be received over-the-air in most of Utah, as well as parts of Idaho, Wyoming, and Nevada.

Ownership

KUTV is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, which is the largest owner of television stations in the United States. Sinclair acquired KUTV in 2017 as part of its purchase of Tribune Media.
