A Study in Fear is a Fieldwork side quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the A Study in Fear Fieldwork side mission.

  • Starting Location: Sukhothai / Khaimuk Saksit Village
  • Requirement: Automatically given after leaving hidden pyramid
  • Reward: 650
  • Quest Description: Might be worth stopping by Pailin before talking to Sunan. No one has better insight into the Fascist activity in the area than she does.

Speak to Pailin

Pailin hands you a document that describes blasting at a dig site in the southwest, and tells you about one of Voss’s expeditions led by a blond lady in the area. Go back into her room, and pick up the document on her desk.

Fieldwork Note #10: Demolition Request

Investigate the Explosions

Head to the dock southwest of the Tree House, and head to the ruined archway. On the right side are some sandbags and right on top is a card.

Fieldwork Note #11: Devil Card (50 AP)

Go through the archway, then turn right when the wall ends. To the southwest are some wooden crates. Head there to find a note on top.

Fieldwork Note #12: Excavation Orders (50 AP)

Go back to the archway, and this time look to the southeast. By the path marked with the wooden planks, to the left is a ruined wall with wooden crates next to it. There’s a note on top of this one too.

Fieldwork Note #13: Dream Journal (50 AP)

Now follow the planks south until you find the entrance that they blasted open, and take a photo of it.

Discovery Note #47: Exploded Opening (80 AP)

Investigate the Temple Grounds

Head inside, and go down the hall.

Explore the Temple

At the other end of the temple you’ll find a door with a switch next to it, turn the switch and you’ll drop through the floor and slide to a stop in a lower chamber somewhere. Squeeze through the gap in the wall and you’ll meet up with Annika, a former student of Dr. Jones who was invited on an expedition by none other than Voss. Indy barks that she doesn’t know what she’s gotten herself into, and leaps into action to get them out of the trap.

Escape the Trap Room

On one wall of the room is a straw mass that you can set fire to that will reveal a switch. Turning the switch lowers a counterweight and begins turning a mechanism next to the door. Take a photo of the puzzle.

Fieldwork Note #14: Symbol Pedestal

Eventually Annika will turn over a key with a circle painted on it.

This pedestal is the first of a series of puzzles that use the same mechanic. There will be a series of keys with symbols on them that match the circle, diamond and cross symbols on the rings of the pedestal. Inserting a key will stop the ring matching the key’s symbol until it is removed. The strategy is that you must remove the key at the moment when all the symbols are lined up. Some keys have two symbols on them, usually requiring a multi-step process to get all three rings aligned.

For now, insert the circle key and wait until all three symbols are aligned, then pull out the key. All three rings will drop, mechanism will stop, and the door will open.

Explore the Temple

You’ll be in the Secret Khmer Vault. Follow Annika as she leads you deeper, squeezing through a narrow gap. Walk down the only path, through a turning cogwheel and climb up the stone platform on the other side.

Stop the Cogwheels

The way ahead is blocked by two counterrotating cogwheels, so turn around and you’ll see a stone ledge to the west that you can use to go back through the rotating cogwheel and reach a higher area, then jump across to another stone platform.

Turn to the east and you’ll see a broken wheel spinning horizontally that you can use to reach the platform on the other side where there is a relic.

Ancient Relic #11: Secret Khmer Vault (180 AP)

Jump back to the stone platform and you will see a switch to turn to stop the cogwheels.

After you turn it, jump back through the wheel and pass through the double cogwheels that have now stopped. On the other side is a new pedestal to solve

Fieldwork Note #15: Another Symbols Pedestal (80 AP)

On the ground nearby is a second key, this time with a cross and a circle on it.

To the southeast is a ring to whip yank to start the water flowing into the mechanism.

Now that the mechanism has the pedestal turning, put in the circle key until the circle and cross are lined up.

Then put in the cross and circle key until the diamond lines up with the other two, then take it out and the door to the southwest will open.

Find the Demon’s Tomb

Annika will charge ahead, and you will be caught in a trapped room. Luckily the trap seems to break. Crawl under the door and go after her. Follow the halls until you reach a large room with a dais and a sarcophagus atop it.

Open the Sarcophagus

Trying to push the lid is fruitless, the animal carvings form large locks that hold it in place. Check the sides of the dais to find a pair of switches. Turning them both causes the locks to withdraw and you and Annika can now open the lid manually.

Sadly, it’s empty. Even worse, the room begins to shake as spikes extend from the now dropping ceiling.

Escape the Sarcophagus Trap

The rumbling will dislodge some of the spikes from the trap above, dropping them to the floor below. Grab one and head for the breakable wall.

Smashing the wall causes the room to begin filling with water, trading one problem for another. As you swim, you’ll see light coming through a crack in one of the walls. Swim for the large beam that has fallen across its base and move it, which will cause the whole wall to collapse under the water pressure, dragging both you and Annika into the churning rapids. You will find yourself being pulled towards a waterwheel, and have to grab for Annika’s hand in time to save your life.

Find the Real Demon’s Tomb

Back on dry land, follow the path to the east. At the end climb up and continue east. Where the path begins to turn to the south, there is a doorway in the north wall that ends in a collapse. In among the rubble is a relic.

Ancient Relic #12: Khmer Water Mill (180 AP)

Head south, and swing across to the next platform. Then swing across to the platform after that.

Then jump to the platform directly across from the water wheel and you’ll get a photo opportunity.

Discovery Note #49: Khmer Water Mill (80 AP)

Jump back and pull Annika up, then you can both activate the switches to open the next door. They have to be activated at the same time though, or you’ll be killed by a pit trap. Interact with the switch to grab it, then Indy will count down. Turn the switch when he says “go” and you will successfully open the door.

Solve the Demon’s Tomb Puzzle

Now you will be in the Burial Chamber, a huge room full of puzzles to solve. First go straight ahead between the two staircases and drop down into the water. Go straight north until you’re in the middle of the room and there will be a corpse here with an artifact.

Discovery Note #48: Jade Humanoid (60 AP)

Next, go stand near the giant demon head and photograph it.

Fieldwork Note #16: Demon’s Head (120 AP)

Go across the bridge that leads to the sealed door on the west side of the room, then turn north. There is a whip attachment, letting you climb that wall.

Pull yourself up at the top, then whip swing to the other side of the room. It’s a long jump but you’ll make it with enough momentum.

Once on the other side you’ll find another relic.

Ancient Relic #13: Khmer Burial Chamber (180 AP)

Also on this platform is a ring to whip yank which starts water flowing into the mechanism. Now go to the east side of the room across the bridge and turn south a bit to see a place to whip climb on the east wall. You’ll climb to a ledge you can hang onto, then shimmy right until you can whip to the wall to the south.

Climb up to the top of this wall and then jump across to the next platform. Then turn to the north to see another branch you can swing from. Again you will be hanging from a ledge, this time shimmy all the way to the left, around two corners until you can drop down to the top of a pillar where a bird has made its nest with the Cross & Diamond Key. Grab it, and you’ll also get a Fieldwork note.

Fieldwork Note #17: Bird’s Nest Key

Drop down, and you can now solve the pedestal puzzles. The puzzles on the east and west side are turning, the one in the south is not. Looking at the pipes under your feet, it looks like solving the east puzzle will allow water to flow through. These puzzles are mostly the same as before, but this time with an added wrinkle. There is a fourth ring that just has a line on it. You need to align all three inner rings with that line to solve the puzzle.

East Puzzle: Looks like you have a bit of a head start, the diamond and line symbols are already lined up. First start with the circle key, pulling it out when the cross and circle are lined up.

Then use the Cross & Circle Key to stop them until they line up with the other two symbols, then pull it out.

The rings will drop and the water will flow.

Now move to the west puzzle. Again, the diamond and line are already lined up, but this time cross and circle are lined up too, making this even easier.

Use the Cross & Circle Key to stop them until they line up with the other two symbols, then pull it out.

Okay, one puzzle left. Slightly more challenging since none of the symbols are in line at the start.

First use the Cross & Diamond Key. All you’re doing here is lining up the diamond and the line, then pulling out the key.

Next use the Circle Key to line up the circle and the cross, then pull it out.

Now you’ve got two sets lined up, all that’s left is to use the Cross & Circle Key to line up one set with the other.

Now all three puzzles are solved, all that’s left it to insert the three keys into the slots around the top of the center pillar and pull the lever that it reveals.

Pull the Lever

Pull the lever, and the Demon’s Head will spin around to reveal the real demon’s tomb.

Inspect the Tomb

Annika starts moving towards the Idol of Yaksha, and if you try to inspect it she gets there just before you do and grabs it. After a moment of shared awe over the artifact her face changes and she abruptly says that you both should leave.

Exit the Tomb

Head for the west door, and turn the switches with Annika. Or maybe not.

Find an Exit

Swim ahead and into a tunnel, and keep going until you find a whip point to climb out.

Head to the north and all of a sudden you’ll hear the grinding of stone and a pained scream. Looks like you’ll get the Idol of Yaksha after all.

Fieldwork Note #18: Yaksha

Fieldwork Note #19: Annika’s Research (50 AP)

Take the Idol to Pailin

Turn the lever next to the door to open it, and… huh. Looks like she lived.

Royal Army are inside the tomb now, so make sure you’re wearing your disguise. Head for the exit, and climb out of the exploded entrance. Head back to the village and give the idol to Pailin to finish the mission.

This finishes A Study in Fear Fieldwork side quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
