The Secret of Giants is a Fieldwork side quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of The Secret of Giants Fieldwork side mission.

  • Starting Location: The Vatican
  • Requirement: Fieldwork begins upon leaving Apostolic Library after Antonio examines the Warrior Giant’s Parchment.
  • Reward: 100 AP
  • Quest Description: Crescenzo’s map had a total of ten inscriptions marked on it. Antonio would probably be interested in seeing the photos of all of them.

There are a total of 10 inscriptions in The Vatican that you must photograph. The first four will be done as part of The Stolen Cat Mummy, and will only be registered as Fieldwork Notes after that quest progresses until you leave the Apostolic Library after Antonio examines the Warrior Giant’s Parchment. This will be the point where you will get The Secret of Giants fieldwork, and the remaining inscriptions will be marked on your maps. Once you’ve taken photos of all 10 inscriptions, return to Antonio and interact with the corkboard to mount the remaining photos to the display. For your trouble, Antonio will give you an ancient relic.

Ancient Relic #7: Antonio’s Relic

Even though the fieldwork is over, it still leaves the question of what all these inscriptions mean. Antonio was very interested in them, but what were they all for? Well there is an answer to that, of a sort. The design of the inscriptions tell a story, and can be put in a specific order based on what each image depicts. This order does not relate in any way to the name given to them in the journal, which is assigned in strictly chronological order.

The narrative is subject to interpretation, but the sequence of events seems to be clear regardless. Skip to the end if you want to avoid spoilers.

  1. Belvedere Courtyard Balcony Inscription

    Metatron gives a “weapon” to the Nephilim, The Great Circle.

  2. Excavation Site Inscription

    Raising the weapon to the heaven, the Nephilim is showing the acceptance of their responsibility while a robed figure, representing humanity, witnesses.

  3. Post Office Cellar Inscription

    Now two robed figures gather, while the Nephilim has taken notice of them for the first time.

  4. Laundry Area Inscription

    A demonic adversary approaches the humans while the Nephilim stands apart, not interfering. A heavenly power appears in the sky.

  5. Fountain of Confession Inscription

    The demonic figure has killed one of the humans, and only now does the Nephilim act, moving to stand between the demon and the humans. The remaining humans gather at an altar, worshipping the heavenly power.

  6. Sewers Inscription

    The Nephilim strikes down the demon but at great sacrifice. The weapon has broken. The humans continue to worship.

  7. Museum Garden Inscription

    The humans worship at their altar. The Nephilim holds the broken sword aloft. A plant begins to sprout.

  8. Museum Wing Inscription

    Many demons approach, and again the Nephilim stands between them and the humans (though one is absent). The plant continues to grow.

  9. Apostolic Palace Inscription

    The Nephilim and one of the humans stand against the demons together. The remaining one kneels in front of the Nephilim, who appears to be reaching out to him.

  10. Belvedere Courtyard Inscription

    The humans and Nephilim have been laid to rest. The plant has withered and died.

Based on the position of the demon and the human fighting, it seems similar to the mural of St. Michael fighting the demon. Making the other two humans, St. Peter and St. Paul?

In any event, now that the images are in the proper order, look at the circular device at the bottom of each crest. There is a lit candle on some, but not others.

I = Lit

II = (Not Lit)

III = Lit

IV = Lit

V = (Not Lit)

VI = Lit

VII = Lit

VIII = (Not Lit)

IX = (Not Lit)

X = Lit

In the Underworld area under the Tower of Nicholas V, there is a room along the north edge of the map that has ten skeletal figures holding lamps. Each one is marked with a roman numeral above their alcoves. If you travel to this room and light the lamps in order according to the images on the inscriptions, then the coffin in the center will slide open revealing a corpse with a sword through its mouth.

On its chest is a jawbone that has 20 durability, which is significantly more than any other weapon in the game. Unfortunately you can’t store it in your inventory, so you will be forced to drop it like any other weapon when climbing ladders, swimming etc. It can’t be repaired either, so for all the effort you’ve gone to it hardly seems worth it. The Secret of Giants fieldwork can be completed without ever returning to this tomb. There’s no other fieldwork or mystery attached to solving the puzzle either, so there isn’t even a beneficial side effect to solving this puzzle.

However there may be a future purpose for this puzzle, and a possible tie-in with the upcoming DLC The Order of Giants.

This finishes The Secret of Giants side quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.
