A Savage Discovery is a Fieldwork side quest in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This walkthrough will guide you through all objectives of the A Savage Discovery Fieldwork side mission.
- Starting Location: The Vatican
- Requirement: Read any of the notes below or encounter Dr. Savage in Vatican Gardens
- Reward: 100 AP
- Quest Description: There’s supposed to be a big excavation ongoing in the Vatican at the moment, lead by a British professor. Perhaps he’s discovered something connected to this mystery.
Finding the Theft Report note in the tent just outside the Apostolic Library will begin the Fieldwork, as will encountering Professor Savage on the street in the Borgia Courtyards.
Fieldwork Note #7: Theft Report
Find the Professor
From Belvedere Gardens head west out the large wooden doors to find Vatican Gardens. From there head south until you reach the Borgia Courtyards, and then east through a doorway. There will be tables and workers taking a break against the north wall. On one of the tables will be a medicine bottle.
Medicine Bottle #3: Borgia Courtyards Break Area
Keep going east until you meet the professor. Talk to him and he will tell you that his assistant Sidney has been captured by the Blackshirts while he was trying to recover a stone fragment with ancient writings on it. Indy promises to help Sidney escape, and tells Professor Savage to meet at the library where it is safe.
Rescue Sidney
Sidney is being held in the security barracks at the north end of Vatican Gardens. The easiest way to get in unnoticed is to climb up the scaffolding on the east side of the street, then up a ladder to the top layer.
From there drop down onto the scaffolding that runs right above the tent roof below, then down the ladder to the ground.
Crouch to remain stealthy, then duck into the tent to the south until the patrolling guard is headed back to the gate. When the coast is clear, stealthily cross the road and crawl under the platform across the street that the tents are built upon.
There will be a Blackshirt on the decking directly above you, so be careful. Follow the crawlspace until you reach a trap door that allows you to climb up into the tent.
Still crouched, steal the two money pouches in this room (40₤). There is a guitar on one of the bunk beds, which makes this a great opportunity to get The Right Note trophy/achievement if you haven’t already.
In the next room, there are two Blackshirts to deal with before you can go up the stairs. Knock them out, then hide their bodies out of sight of the windows. Down the trap door is an easy solution. With no witnesses you can steal the money pouches in the room (40₤), then head upstairs to find another money pouch (30₤) and a Medicine Bottle.
Medicine Bottle #4: Vatican Gardens Security Barracks
In the next room are two Blackshirts. The first will be sitting down and you can ambush him easily, but it’s very difficult to do without alerting the other soldier in the room. If he notices you, take him out as quickly and quietly as possible.
After you do, take the money pouch (20₤) on the table. In the next room will be a postcard on the table. Grab that then head downstairs silently.
Discovery Note #22: St. Peter Postcard (15 AP)
There will be one more Blackshirt sitting in the room outside Sidney’s cell. Using an improvised weapon may not be enough to knock him out at this stage, so be ready to follow up with some punching. Also in the room is another locked box with money inside (120₤).
On the south wall, grab the Jail Cell Key from the hook and open the door.

Talk to Sidney and he will tell you where to find the stone tablet, and that you’ll have to talk to the dig worker named Giuseppe. You’ll send him to meet Professor Savage at the library, and then you’ll have to sneak out the way you came in but before you do, check inside Sidney’s jail cell for a note.

Get to the Excavation Site
On the way out, stop by the tent on the east side of the road. Grab two money pouches and a stack of cash from the red foot locker (110₤), and a comic from the bench near the south wall.
Discovery Note #23: Tales of Dread #3 (15 AP)
The waypoint is directing you to the Apostolic Palace, but there are multiple guards outside that you would have to go through. Instead head back to the Borgia Courtyards to where you’d met Professor Savage. There’s another route here, but first grab a collectible that’s in this area.
Fieldwork Note #9: Fool Card
Climb up the ladder on the north side of the street, then look up to the west to see a whip point to climb up to.
Once at the top, first look to the north and see a medicine bottle on a crate.
Medicine Bottle #5: Borgia Courtyard Rooftop
Look to the south to find a pipe that you can climb across to a balcony, then climb up to the roof above.

Then follow the ledge to the open window and enter the Palazzo.
Crouch and silently move through the door and turn to the northwest and go down the stairs. At the bottom turn around and go to the door under the stairs to the southwest.
Once through the door, head straight across the room to the far door, then through the double doors to the east to reach the excavation site.
Find Giuseppe
Head south around the edge of the area, staying behind the wooden barrier built between metal struts.
Next head east just inside the row of columns to avoid the Blackshirts on break on the other side. As long as the fascist walking up and down the middle walkway isn’t looking in your direction, you should be able to sneak inside the building without being seen.
Find money pouches in the drawer and on the table (50₤), more cash in the locked box (120₤), and a couple collectibles.

Medicine Bottle #6: Excavation Site
Finding the Dig Site Schedule, Indy will learn that Giuseppe is working in section F. Crouch and slowly open the door on the north side of the tent to locate the Blackshirt that is patrolling the walkway outside. When he turns away, head out the door and quickly subdue the stationary guard outside the tent. Immediately pick up the body and carry it inside the tent, careful not to dump it near the wide open doorway to the west.
After hiding the body, head back out the same door and go to the right down a ramp. Watch for a patrol around the corner, then head to the north around the column and drop down to the bottom of the dig site.
Head north and look around the corner, and you’ll see section F right across from you. Inside, Giuseppe is the only worker you’ll encounter.
He will tell you that the stone tablet has been taken away to the cellar like all the artifacts that are found, then he tries to fight you. Knock him out and then search the body to get the Cellar Key.

Find the Address
Head east back the way you came, and climb up the ladder while avoiding the notice of the patrolling Blackshirt. Unlock and leave through the nearby gate, go down the stairs, then drop down to the street below.
Head back to the Post Office, avoiding the Captains patrolling the street who will see through your disguise. On the east side of the Post Office is a ramp down to the cellar. Unlock the door and you’ll see the stone fragment on a pile of bricks. Pick up the fragment and you’ll decipher it, just in time to be interrupted by a fascist. Knock him out to get the Lockbox Note, which will give you the combination to the nearby foot locker.
Discovery Note #25: Lockbox Note
The note tells you that the combination is “November, last year” which makes it 1136. Open the locker for an adventure book.
Adventure Book #5: Street Scrapper I (Requires 250 AP)
There’s also an inscription here in the cellar. Photograph it before you leave.

Return the Stone Fragment
Head back to the library to meet with Professor Savage and Sidney. Hand over the stone fragment to finish the quest.
One last thing, take a nice photo for them to commemorate the occasion.
