Introduction

Welcome to the Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Brushes with Death DLC Trophy Guide! Brushes wth Death is the first major paid DLC expansion of KCD2. It adds 10 new quests that revolve around helping an enigmatic painter. The DLC start will be marked by a purple map icon in Trosky region, after having finished Main Quest 6: For Whom the Bells Tolls. It can still be done after the main story. For the 5th quest “The Night-Mare” you must have reached Kuttenberg region, which can be explored after Main Quest 14: Speak of the Devil. This means some progress in the main game is required to fully access all DLC quests. The DLC can’t be started without the necessary main game progress.

Step 1: Complete the 10 Brushes with Death DLC Quests while getting all Missable Trophies along the way

All 10 DLC quests are classified as “Side Quests” in the journal. Unlike the main game, it doesn’t keep a golden permanent save after each quest, so you’ll want to be careful with the missable trophies. Keep a manual Saviour Schnapps save before starting the DLC in case you miss a trophy.

Simply follow the Brushes with Death Walkthrough and you’ll get all trophies along the way. It will also help you with where to go and what to do.

The first 4 quests take place in the starting region “Trosky” and the last 6 quests take place in the Kuttenberg region which requires having finished Main Quest 14: Speak of the Devil. For some trophies you will need high skill levels, you will need at least: 20 Scholarship, 19 Charisma, 16 Alchemy, and around 20 Speech.

It is therefore recommended to play through the main story first to level up. The DLC is still fully accessible after the main game story.

Overview of all DLC quests and associated trophies:

  1. A Sketchy Situation
  2. Source of Inspiration –  Poet’s Gut
  3. Chiaroscuro
  4. Portrait in Red –  Vengeance Solves Nothing
  5. The Night-Mare
  6. Man Proposes –  Curiosity Killed the Cat
  7. God Disposes –  Confessor
  8. Stained Honour –  Painted
  9. Root of Evil –  Nothing But the Best
  10. Unveiling –  All Fun and Games +  Masterpiece +  Rest in One Piece

Step 2: Miscellaneous Trophies

Two trophies are not quest-related, they are related to the new shield-painting feature:  Bohemian Graffitti &  Bohemians Rise Up!. Do these now, these only take a few minutes after you’re done with the DLC story. After this you will have all trophies.

Nothing But the Best

You gave the painter medicine of the highest quality.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 9: Root of Evil

Takes place during objective “Brew the mandrake potion”. For this you need brew Henry’s mandrake decoction, then the trophy unlocks immediately at the alchemy bench after brewing the potion. You have to be at least Alchemy Level 16 and have the Alchemy Skill “Secret of Secrets”. It allows you to brew “Henry” quality potions, which is the highest quality possible. Also use freshly picked sage (not dried). If you haven’t reached Alchemy Level 16, you must spend some time leveling it up by brewing other potions. Each potion you brew increases it. You can also check if scribes sell skill books that increase it. Note: drinking highest level Fox Potion increases XP gain even further.

Fresh Sage can be found in Kuttenberg city > Woodland garden, behind the apothecary:

It’s best to make a save before starting the brewing process. In case you run out of ingredients you can reload. When ready, interact with any alchemy bench.

Then look at the recipe book on the right and flip to the page of Mandrake Concoction. You will automatically have the recipe as part of the quest, no need to buy the recipe anywhere. It’s a DLC exclusive recipe that wasn’t part of the main game. Then hold to place the ingredients automatically from the book (or to open inventory and place them manually).

Mandrake Concoction Recipe:

  1. Add wine to the cauldron
  2. Add in the mandrake root (from shelf in bottom right) and boil for 1 turn
  3. Grind the freshwater pearl with mortar & pestle, add it to the cauldron
  4. Boil for 1 turn
  5. Grind 2 sage with mortar & pestle, add to the cauldron
  6. Using the bellows, boil for 1 turn
  7. Use a phial (bottom left), interact with the Still to distil

If you do all steps correctly (especially boiling time) you will get Henry’s mandrake decoction and unlock  Nothing But the Best. It unlocks as soon as the potion is brewed. A “Strong mandrake decoction” won’t unlock the trophy.

Rest in One Piece

The skull finally reached its final resting place.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 10: Unveiling

This takes place during objective “Go to the painter”, at the very end of the DLC storyline during the final dialogue. When returning to the painter, you have to pick specific dialogues and win a speech skill check to convince him you care about him and didn’t help him for money. Then he gives you his skull and you must place it in the grave you visited in the 7th quest God Disposes.

When talking to the painter and pick these dialogues to get his skull:

  • I’ve brought you the last statuette for the altar
  • That’s only natural
  • You’re doing it for Voyta
  • I help everyone
  • You said they weren’t sins
  • It wasn’t murder but a good job
  • No, I do care about you (Speech Skill Check – Medium difficulty) -> must succeed this for  Rest in One Piece to get the skull! I had 24 speech skill but less should suffice.
  • I’m here because you’re my friend -> he will open up to you
  • The devil isn’t leading you, don’t be afraid -> he gives the skull after the ending

It will trigger a cutscene, then you talk to the painter again:

  • Can I help you with anything else?
  • What will you do next?

Afterward the DLC storyline is complete and you unlock the story-related  Masterpiece trophy/achievement (you finished Brushes with Death).

If you picked the correct dialogues, he will give you his skull “Painter’s muse“. Now you just need to return to Voyta’s grave from God Disposes and place the skull in there. Bring a shovel to dig up the grave (can be bought from merchants). The grave is in the southwest of Kuttenberg region, between the towns Bylany and Wysoka, under the tree with 3 roots. It should still be marked on the map with an icon called “Vojtech’s grave“. You have to dig up the grave, then interact with the skeleton to place the skull.

This unlocks  Rest in One Piece and the DLC story is officially complete.

All Fun and Games

Hopefully now Stihlau understand there are some things you shouldn’t joke about.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 10: Unveiling

For this you must do the optional objectives “Free Chrudosh” & “Talk to Chrudosh”, then return to carpenter’s workshop in Kuttenberg and talk to Stihlau.

During objective “Find the carved figurine” you will reach a bandit camp. There you find the carpenter’s apprentice Chrudosh tied to a tree and get objective “Free Chrudosh (Optional)”. You have to untie him, ideally at night when the bandits are sleeping. You should avoid killing the bandits, because if Chrudosh sees you murdering everyone he will run away scared and refuses to talk.

If you free him unnoticed he will run to a road, follow him and talk:

  • (Where’s the statuette now? -> only if you free him before stealing the statuette)
  • Why did you steal the statuette?
  • What will you do?
  • Tell me about that lass. -> he mentions Stihlau (the NPC for  All Fun and Games)
  • Next time, go to her yourself.
  • Why were they holding you in the camp?
  • You should get out of here.

Now fast travel back to Kuttenberg. BEFORE returning to the painter, go back to where you talked to the carpenter earlier in the quest. Outside the carpenter’s house you should find Journeyman Stihlau (at daytime). Talk to him and say “I met Chrudosh”. After the dialogue the trophy unlocks!

Curiosity Killed the Cat

If you hadn’t poked around, Libor wouldn’t be swinging.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 6: Man Proposes

Takes place during objective “Talk to the person living in the dugout”. For this trophy you must accept the broken sword from the mad man, reforge it, and return it to him, then pass time until he hangs himself and find his body.

When you approach the mad man at the hideout he will start attacking you. Defeat him, then pick these dialogues to get his sword:

  • “Why were you so hostile?”
  • “(Say Nothing)”
  • “(Say Nothing)”
  • “Very well, I’ll take it” –> he gives you Madman’s broken sword

For the trophy, you’ll now have to go to a blacksmith and reforge the sword yourself. You can find blacksmiths in Kuttenberg. You need 1x Fastening Material + 3x Frankfurt Steel. If you don’t have these, you can buy them from the blacksmiths.

When you’re done crafting, you will receive Madman’s longsword.

Now return to the mad man at the dugout. If you haven’t done the next objective yet, it should still be marked with the “D” objective. Talk to him and say:

  • “I fixed your broken sword”
  • “The sword belongs to you, you should keep it”
  • Must win skill check “Face your fears and take it” (hard Speech Skill check – confirmed to succeed at 22 speech – needed for trophy)
  • “What actually happened to you?”
  • “What does the sword have to do with all this”
  • “How did they kill your friend?”
  • “You mentioned some names”
  • “So you don’t know painter Voyta?”
  • “Why do you live here?”
  • “Burkhard is dead”

The man will stop talking to you. Go to Maleshov (next town to the south-west) and skip time for 24 hours. Then ride back to the dugout. You will see the mad man hung himself from the tree. When you get close there will be an / prompt in the bottom right corner that says “Hanged Man” to investigate further which will zoom in on him. Upon doing this the trophy  Curiosity Killed the Cat will unlock.

Note: I tested skipping time while near the dugout and that didn’t work. It seems you have to get far enough away before skipping time. If you skipped the trophy during this quest, what worked for some players is to come back later with the repaired sword, knock the mad man unconscious and put the repaired sword in his inventory, then rest 24h in Maleshov and return and he should’ve hanged himself. He just needs the repaired sword in his inventory to hang himself, regardless of whether you give it to him in dialogue or place it on his body.

Painted

But not paid for.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 8: Stained Honour

Unlocks by completing the optional objective “Deface the painter’s work (Optional)”.

During objective “Obtain the painter’s promised reward” you’ll have to talk to the bailiff in Pschitoky (unmissable main objective). Go through his dialogues to get the optional objective:

  • I’ve come for the painter’s reward
  • You promised him a gemstone
  • Why do you need that gemstone?
  • What if we made an impression in another way?
  • What do you mean by that?
  • I agree to the duel –> afterward you get objective “Deface the painter’s work”

Now you must go to the tower in the south-west corner of Pschitoky. After entering the tower, go up one floor and enter the bailiff’s room. There will be a painting on the wall next to his bed, which is what he commissioned the painter for.

Approach the painting to get an inspection prompt  and press to paint over it. This will unlock the  Painted trophy/achievement.

If there’s a guard stationed in front of the door, you can toss stones to distract him, or just run past him and let him see you repaint the wall, then pay a trespassing fine (around 220 Groschen), or run away. If you come at night there shouldn’t be a guard, but the bailiff will be in his room and wakes up when you paint over the wall, but can run away after.

Confessor

The painter told you everything.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 6: Man Proposes & DLC Quest 7: God Disposes

For this only the dialogues in the 6th and 7th quest matter, any conversations you have with the painter in earlier quests are of no consequence for this trophy. You’ll get it while following the walkthrough.

Step 1: DLC Quest 6: Man Proposes – at end of quest when returning to the painter during objective “Talk to Voyta”: during the dialogue be sure to stick to these exact choices, which will be available if you unlocked Curiosity Killed the Cat earlier in this quest. It’s unclear which (if any) of these choices are absolutely mandatory to earn the trophy, but this is what I picked and unlocked Confessor at the end of the next quest God Disposes. So this is what’s confirmed and recommended:

  • “I went to the dugout”
  • “The place is a wreck”
  • “There’s a scarecrow on an anthill”
  • “There was a ruined wagon”
  • “He mentioned you and Burkhard”
  • “That’s an awful lot of coincidences” (SPEECH SKILL CHECK – EASY)
  • “Who was the real Voyta?”
  • “So you’re not Voyta?”
  • “Did you know Libor lives in the dugout?”
  • “Why did you send me to the dugout?”
  • “Why do you blame yourself?”
  • “So the thing with Burkhard was vengeance?”
  • “What is it?” -> starts God Disposes quest
  • “Where is it?”
  • “That must have been awful for you” (Reputation+)
  • “I still don’t know where the grave is”
  • “Is that how you introduce yourself to others?”
  • “The grave! Where is it?”
  • (Say nothing)
  • “Why haven’t you been there in so long?”
  • “What should I say in the prayer?”
  • (Say nothing)
  • “Do you want to go with me?”
  • “Alright, I’ll go there”.

Immediately after this conversation, talk to the painter again and tell him that Libor hung himself (must’ve done Curiosity Killed the Cat) – unclear if this matters but it’s what I did:

  • “Libor hung himself”
  • “You don’t, but you really should know”
  • “I’ll let you grieve”

Step 2: DLC Quest 7: God Disposes – at end of quest when returning to the painter during objective “Return to the painter”: exhaust all dialogue options, these will all be available if you followed the choices outlined in previous quest:

  • I visited Voyta’s grave
  • Tell me more about Voyta and Libor
  • Libor is the son of a bailiff?
  • Does Libor know you’re a painter?
  • What was Voyta like?
  • I don’t understand why you blame yourself
  • How did the argument end?
  • Then what happened? (TIMED CHOICE)
  • Kurva… (TIMED CHOICE)
  • Do you think Voyta betrayed you?
  • It’s up to God to decide –>  Confessor unlocked!
Poet’s Gut

Every strophe is a work of art.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 2: Source of Inspiration

This trophy takes place during objective “Repair Kvyetoslava’s old dress”. Before you return to the old woman make sure you have at least 20 Scholarship skill (viewable under Player > Skills) & 19+ Charisma. Make a manual save before talking to the old woman again. You can quickly raise Scholarship by buying all books from scribes in Kuttenberg and reading them, including skill books (Kuttenberg is reached during Main Quest 16: Into the Underworld). For high Charisma make sure you put on fine clothes, can be bought from tailors if you don’t already have a good outfit. Additionally, the speech skill “Ladies’ Man” grants a +2 bonus to all skill checks, so if your skill level is 2 below (18 Scholarship & 17 Charisma) you can still do it.

Now return to the old woman at Vidlak Pond and deliver her dress. Then she wants you to tell her a poem. For the trophy you have win all 4 skill checks in a row to get a unique dialogue with her afterward. Don’t pick the non-skill dialogues because these will void the trophy. If you fail a skill check it also voids the trophy.

Pick the following dialogues:

  • “I’ve got your dress” (deliver it)
  • “Let’s dance, then”
  • “She yearned for something more” (Scholarship)
  • “He brought her gifts” (Charisma)
  • “They were equals” (Scholarship)
  • “Remember Veles” (Scholarship) –>  Poet’s Gut unlocked

Note that it’s also fine to pick the other skill check options as long as they succeed. The only thing that matters is that you win all 4 skill checks in a row. Scholarship is the most reliable because it appears in 3 dialogue choices, but if your other stats are higher you can pick those. If you fail a skill check you must reload the save and spend time improving your skill levels.

Vengeance Solves Nothing

You let Burkhard live.

*MISSABLE*

DLC Quest 4: Portrait in Red

This is done during objective “Kill Burkhard”. Go to the waypoint in the woods north-east of Trosky Castle. Burkhard and his gang are in the middle of the search area, exactly where the “A” objective letter is on the map. Make a save before going there.

For the trophy, you have to steal Burkhard’s helmet without killing him. Skip time until 2:00AM, Burkhard and his bandits will be asleep. Sneak into the middle of his camp, lockpick the medium-difficulty chest and loot “Killer’s Helmet”:

Having the Thievery Skill “Silent Fiddler” is helpful so you don’t make noise while lockpicking. Also wear dark light-weight clothes to remain unnoticed.

Now return to the painter in Trosky Castle where the quest started (skip time until next morning when he’s awake). You have to lie to him and say:

  • “I’ve got Burkhard’s helmet”
  • “Yes he’s dead (Lie)” (Speech Skill Check) –> if you win the skill check, the quest will complete and  Vengeance Solves Nothing unlocks.

If you don’t have sufficient speech stat, you have to spend time leveling it up or buy other skills that increase speech before you can earn this trophy.

Masterpiece

You finished Brushes with Death.

DLC Quest 10: Unveiling

Automatic story-related trophy, cannot be missed. Unlocks after the final DLC quest Unveiling with any outcome.

Bohemian Graffitti

You painted every type of shield.

You unlock the ability to paint shields after DLC Quest 1: A Sketchy Situation. Then you can talk to the painter “Master Voyta” at any time to have him repaint your shields with different designs. After the first quest he will be at Trosky Castle. After the 4th quest he moves to Kuttenberg, but you can still talk to him there. You can also still do it after the DLC story.

Changing any one element of the shield is enough (pattern, color, symbol).

There are 4 types of shields you must repaint:

  • Pavese shield – bought from armorers
  • Knight shield – bought from armorers
  • Heater shield – bought from armorers
  • Round shields – dropped by Cuman bandits who carry shields, not available for purchase. You find them in bandit camps or during random bandit encounters while fast traveling.

If you already played through the main story you may already have one of each (check your horse inventory and personal chest next to beds too). If not, you can buy (or steal) them from armorers and weaponsmiths in Kuttenberg city. You can recognize the shields by their names and shape.

Getting a round shield is the only annoying part if you don’t already have one. Fast travel back and forth through Kuttenberg until you encounter Cumans with round shields, or check bandit camps. If you have the “Shields of Seasons Passing” DLC (from Pre-Order or Gold Edition or bought separately for $2.99) you will already have the “Shield of Summer” in your personal chest, which is a round shield and counts too!

Bohemians Rise Up!

Bohemians Rise Up!

First this you will need 3 shields of the type “Knight Shield” and repaint them with specific patterns/colors/symbols. You can buy Knight Shields from armorers & weaponsmiths in Kuttenberg. To repaint shields talk to the painter Master Voyta who is the quest giver of all DLC quests. You will unlock all required designs automatically from DLC quests, so if you don’t have them available finish the DLC first.

Knight Shield #1:

  • Pattern: Barry indented
  • Colour I: Gules
  • Colour II: Gules
  • Category: Historical
  • Symbol: Lion argent

Knight Shield #2:

  • Pattern: Per fess
  • Colour I: Azure
  • Colour II: Azure
  • Category: Historical
  • Symbol: Moravian Eagle

Knight Shield #3:

  • Pattern: Per fess
  • Colour I: Or
  • Colour II: Or
  • Category: Historical
  • Symbol: Eagle sable

The trophy pops as soon as you repainted the third shield.
