This walkthrough sections covers all side areas that are now available in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 starting from Act 3 of the story that weren’t covered previously. Note that there are a bunch of areas that don’t include any trophy/achievement related collectibles along with a bunch of optional bosses spread around The Continent, and it is still recommended to explore and fight bosses and pick up items to prepare for the hidden bosses at the end of the guide, which are much higher level than the Act 3 story bosses.

Collectibles Overview:

  • Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Collectible Guide

ENDGAME AREAS

After defeating the final boss and seeing your determined ending, you are returned to the last Expedition Flag before fighting Renoir. You can start NG+ at any time by choosing the option at a flag, but will want to clean up all collectibles in this playthrough first. Going into NG+ isn’t required for any trophies/achievements unless you missed something this playthrough, but it does increase the level of enemies and allows you to get higher level drops if you don’t manage to hit level 99 before finishing everything else.

Order listed for cleanup is the order of difficulty (saving the hardest bosses for last).

Side Area – Endless Tower

The Endless Tower is a battle tower, involving a series of fights against enemy groups of increasing difficulty. Enemies start at around the level of the end of the story and increase to a level around the level of the hidden bosses. You can and should start working on the tower throughout the endgame cleanup, as this helps to level your characters and is potentially more interesting to not do all battles in a row. Unfortunately, repeating the fights doesn’t award extra Chroma or XP so you can’t grind fights in the tower to level up. There is a method for level grinding explained at the end of the walkthrough.

The Endless Tower includes 11 Stages with 3 fights in each, for a total of 33 fights that you need to beat. It includes fights against almost every possible enemy in the game, including Chromatic versions of enemies and repeat fights against the Paintress and Curator. If you weren’t using Monoco before now you can unlock almost all of his skills through the fights in the tower.

Stage 9 Trial 3 is where the fights starts becoming more out of the ordinary, including mechanics from other endgame locations on top of the normal Chromatic Bosses. This trial includes two Evique that will shield each other if they are not stunned, so pay attention to which has the shield icon if they are both still active as the shielded one will not take any damage.

Stage 11 Trial 1 is again the Dualliste and Mask Keeper, along with a Chromatic Moissonneuse. Try to immediately get rid of the Moissonneuse as it is the weakest, then the Mask Keeper and the Dualliste last. The Dualliste has the most health of the three and is easiest to deal with on its own. Use Maelle’s level 3 Gradient Gommage on the Dualliste to deal a massive amount of damage when it is available.

Stage 11 Trial 2 is against a Chromastic Clair Obscur, a Creation, and a Lampmaster. The Clair Obscur is priority to deal with, as it can silence your party if you don’t avoid its attacks, making the fight extremely difficult. On your turns make sure to shoot the Lampmasters lanterns to stop it getting an extra turn to shoot at you then focus it next. Finally deal with the Creation on its own. Pay attention for if the Creation inverts your characters, as you don’t want to heal anyone directly, but reviving while inverted is still fine.

Stage 11 Trial 3 is against Painted Love, which is a duo fight against the Curator and the Paintress simultaneously. They both share a health bar, so you can’t focus specifically on one or the other here. You can use this to your advantage in some ways though, such as marking one of the two by shooting on one turn, then leaving the mark on the other for a later attack. They also shared a break bar, so if you have a skill such as Radiant Slash on Verso you can break both of them at the same time as long as you hit them both at once. If you don’t, it consumes the break bar for both of them with only one of them being stunned. If you do only manage to break one, focus your attacks on it while it is stunned for maximum damage output. Utilizing Maelle’s Gommage Gradient is very useful here, especially if you can break and mark one of the two. Depending on your setup you can almost one shot the boss with it.

Once you defeat the trial you receive Outfit: Clair for Verso, a Perfect Chroma Catalyst, the Record: Clea, and the trophy/achievement  “Endless”. You can also speak to the Fading Woman again to receive Haircut: Ponytail White for Maelle.

Record #27: Clea – Received automatically after defeating all trials in the Endless Tower.

Side Area – The Canvas

Key Item: Manor Family Canvas – Enter the area and walk forward to the large painting, interact with it to receive the Manor Family Canvas.

Side Area – Red Woods

Nevron Quest #7: Benisseur – Enter the area and interact with the glowing basin on the ground. Choose to pour in 5,000, then 10,000, then 25,000, and finally 50,000 Chroma to receive the Recovery Pictos and complete the interaction.

Side Area – Stone Wave Cliffs Cave

Journal #40: Expedition 54 – At the back of the area is a Chromatic Hexga boss, with the journal on the ground to its right.

Side Area – Crushing Cavern

Journal #41: Expedition 45 – Defeat the boss blocking the path, then the journal is on the upper floor past the pickup that you could see when you were entering the area before dropping through the floor.

Side Area – Frozen Hearts

This is a large side area where you pick up the item requested by the Grandis merchant located in Monoco’s Station.

Expedition Flag – Icebound Train Station

Journal #42: Expedition 51 – From the flag follow the path forward to the left going past the caves. You will spot a train car on the left with an item you can’t reach, then just past is a large door with this journal in front.

Expedition Flag – Glacial Falls

Nevron Quest #8: Danseuse – From the flag take the left path up the stairs and go to the end of the train tracks. You can then drop into an area with a bunch of white Nevron Danseuse. Agree to a dance, then parry all of the attacks. The pattern is the same as the three hit combo the normal Danseuse do, just slightly faster and a bunch of times in a row. You can retry as many times as you need, if you die during the sequence you are returned to standing in front of the Danseuse and can interact to speak with them again.

Record #28: Clea! Don’t Pull Your Sister’s Hair! – From the flag take the right path into the cave (not toward the enemies) and you reach an underground area (you can also reach the underground area by going toward the enemies and up to a climbing path, then down the right side climbing path instead of up to progress further into the area). In the underground area where the large enemy is walking around is a door to The Manor. Inside the room you end up in is the record on a table.

Journal #43: Unknown – While still in the Manor, you can interact with the empty frame on the right stairwell in the entrance to place the Manor Family Canvas. This opens the door at the far end of the hall, allowing you to enter and pick up the journal.

Expedition Flag – Iced Heart

No trophy/achievement related collectibles.

Expedition Flag – Icebound Terminal

Key Item: Eternal Ice – Beat the Gargant boss to receive this item. Take it back to the Grandis merchant by the boxes inside Monoco’s Station to make the Survivor Pictos available for purchase from their shop.

Journal #44: Julie – On a raised area you need to fly to west of Forgotten Battlefield, beside the tents.

Journal #45: Verso – On a raised area you need to fly to west of Forgotten Battlefield, at the back behind the group of enemies (same platform Journal: Julie is located).

World Boss: Sprong – Sprong is an optional world boss located just west of the Blades’ Graveyard location standing in the water, you probably spotted them earlier in the game but they are about on level with the finale of the story so you can now fight them.

Sprong attacks in “stages”, performing a different action in each stage. Stage 1 is a single attack that hits all party members, Stage 2 is casting debuffs on each party member one at a time, Stage 3 is a series of 5 attacks hitting all party members, Stage 4 it will charge an extermination attack, and finally Stage 5 it will use the extermination attack to hit all party members with Dark damage. After it goes through each Stage it starts over, repeating the Stages but getting stronger each cycle (Stage 1 hits twice instead of once for example).  Once you defeat it, you receive the Cheater Pictos along with the trophy/achievement Sprong . Cheater is very useful for setting up strong combos with characters like Maelle because it allows you to always take two turns in a row.

Side Area – White Sands

Record #29: Aline – At the back of the area on the ground by a boat.

Monoco Skills #42: Grosse Tete Whack – Outside the Coastal Cave location you can find this miniboss standing around. It would have been extremely difficult if you tried fighting it when it was first accessible, but now it shouldn’t pose too much trouble as long as you can parry its attacks. It will bounce an increasing number of times each turn it has, so you still want to finish it off as quickly as you can so you aren’t stuck parrying it for an extended period of time each turn. You will encounter another one of these later (that does respawn) in one of the two endgame areas with hidden bosses.

Side Area – The Crows

Journal #46: Expedition 34 – In the entrance to the area beside the flag. If you want to fight the Chromatic miniboss in this area, shoot all of the crows to make it appear.

On the east side of the map is a large area you can fly to with no marked locations, but a number of things to pick up and deal with.

Record #30: Forlorn – On the south part near the water is a door to the Manor.

In the room you appear in, interact with the wardrobe to reveal a secret room. Inside this room is the record.

World Boss: Chromatic Petank – On the north side of the open area you can find a Petank wandering around.

To fight it you need to chase it down to the far south of the area through the water and around to the dead end where its platform is located.

This Petank is unique in that it won’t flee itself, but it will summon the other variants of Petank to attack you and protect itself, and these will flee. You need to try and focus the two Petank it spawns to help so that they won’t flee, while still attacking the main one. Using the Cheater Pictors/Lumina obtained from defeating Sprong is very helpful for this so that you can focus on multiple at a time with multiple turns. The Petanks also typically stay stunned for longer than one turn which prevents them from fleeing, so always try to stun them if possible. Beating the Chromatic Petank awards the Anti-Stun Pictos, along with the trophy/achievement  Carreau Parfait.

Lost Gestral #7 – On a floating island on the south side of the Endless Tower very high in the air.

Lost Gestral #8 – In a location you can reach by flying slightly northeast of The Reacher.

Lost Gestral #9 – On the east side of the map is a red forest area you can fly to. On the south side of the path opposite the entrance to Endless Night Sanctuary you can find the last Lost Gestral. This unlocks the trophy/achievement  Lost Gestrals immediately, but make sure to return to camp and speak with Sastro for your rewards. For finding the final Lost Gestral you receive the Pro Retreat Pictos.

Side Area – Floating Cemetery

MISSABLE: Nevron Quest #9: Chalier – Past the flag on the left you can find the Nevron standing by a pile of bodies. Choose a weapon it should wield (this will correspond to which you fight it with) then it will go into the building. Go inside and fight it.

After beating it, speak with it and it asks you to kill it. YOU MUST AGREE TO KILL IT. If you don’t, this doesn’t count as completing the quest. Agreeing causes it to give you the Auto Powerful Pictos, completing the request.

Side Area – The Fountain

Nevron Quest #10: Blanche – Head into the area to find Blanche standing in the second open area. Speak to it, and it will have a different reaction depending on whether you spared or killed the other white Nevrons. If you spared them as recommended, you receive 100 x Colour of Lumina, but if you killed them you will have to fight it, after which you receive 10 x Colour of Lumina and 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst (a significantly worse reward, hence the recommendation to spare them all). Either way, once you complete this interaction you should receive the trophy/achievement Aiding the Enemy . If you didn’t it is likely you didn’t finish speaking with one of the prior Nevron to receive their reward, so should return to each and try speaking with them again.

Journal #47: Expedition 84 – Past where Blanche is standing you can find the journal in a corner.

Side Area – Gestral Beach

Gestral Game #5: Climbing Wall – No Gestral on the ground to speak to this time, you need to climb to the top of the wall avoiding the flaming orbs coming from above. Try to stick to the middle so you can move left or right when the pairs of orbs descend. If you get hit you are knocked to the bottom and must try again. There is some leeway where if you are in the process of jumping to the side, the orbs won’t hit you if you are moving to an empty spot. Make it to the top and speak with the Grandis to receive Outfit: Swimsuit for Maelle. If you finished all prior games you will also receive the trophy/achievement  Gestral Games.

Journal #48: Expedition 37 – Beside the exit of the area.

Side Area – Flying Casino

Record #31: Reveries dans Paris – Follow the path up to the casino building then walk around the right side where the record is on the ground. You can also interact with the door of the building as Monoco to receive an outfit.

Record #32: Linen and Cotton – Purchased from Gestral Merchant standing beside the entrance to Isle of the Eyes side area for 1,000 Chroma.

World Boss: Serpenphare – On the east side of the map flying above White Sands.

During the fight Serpenphare will alternate between sucking up all of your party’s AP, then applying rush to itself along with a large number of shields. The main problem through the fight will be dealing with those factors, so before you start make sure you’ve equipped skills on characters like Verso or Maelle that allow you to fill their AP during turns. Shooting the boss is useful for getting rid of its shields, but note that when you shoot it this doesn’t do damage due to the AP absorption effect. Pay close attention to your turn order along with this, and if needed use your Energy Tints to feed AP to later characters in the turn order.

An easy option is to set up Maelle having the Breaking Rules skill to absorb all shields, use Sekarum weapon to hit through shields or Barrier Breaker to break all shields on a marked enemy, and use Cheater on her and then Last Chance followed by one of her strongest attacks on the second turn if you remove all shields the prior turn. Watch out as after it absorbs a certain amount of AP it will explode and stun itself, but this explosion also deals massive damage to your party if you don’t dodge it.

Defeating the Serpenphare awards the Energy Master Pictos, a Perfect Chroma Catalyst which allows you to upgrade a weapon to maximum level, along with the trophy/achievement A On .

Side Area – Painting Workshop

The final part of the Painting Workshop, the portal is located on a floating island east of Sirene. Repeat the same process talking to the Faceless Boy to receive Shape of the Beast, then interacting with the statue. This will open the area at the very back behind the statue, allowing you to face the Lampmaster boss.

This fight is largely the same as the one from the end of Act I, just with a significantly stronger boss. Remember to watch when it lights its lamps on its turn, then shoot them in the same order on your turn to cancel out its attacks. Watch your health if you are hit as the Lampmaster’s attacks can deal blight damage, so you may want to set yourself up with Lumina that allow you to heal status effects on your party members as Blight persists through being revived without extra abilities or Lumina to clear it.

Beating the Lampmaster awards level 30 versions of the At Death’s Door and Energising Attack I Pictos, along with the trophy/achievement  Noir et Blanc. Speak with the Faceless Boy by the exit to the area to also receive a Perfect Chroma Catalyst.

Side Area – Flying Manor

Flying Manor is a large side area where the hidden boss Clea is located. Through the area you will encounter repeats of a number of previous bosses and can obtain a bunch of Perfect Chroma Catalysts.

Expedition Flag – Central Plaza

The Flying Manor has 4 paths you can take from the Central Plaza, each leading to a repeat boss that needs to be defeated to open the door at the back of the area. Guide order starts from the left and goes clockwise to the right. If you missed the Gross Tete miniboss on the world boss for Monoco’s skill there is also a respawning one on the left path here.

Monoco Skills #43: Duallist Storm – On the first path to the left (climb the wall near the broken bridge) you can find the Duallist boss at the top of the stairs past the first two enemies (if you started working through the Endless Tower you may have obtained this already, and that is how to obtain it if you don’t defeat this boss with Monoco). Defeating it awards a Perfect Chroma Catalyst. You can speak with the boy who appears after the boss dies to immediately go back to the plaza, or fight the enemies past the boss and pick up some items. The same applies for the other three areas.

Perfect Chroma Catalyst: On the third path, received for defeating the Evique trio.

Monoco Skills #44: Lampmaster Light – On the fourth path to the right (go down the stairs to the elevator down) you can find the Lampmaster boss up the rope behind the Gargant (if you started working through the Endless Tower or completed the Painting Workshop you my have obtained this already, and this is how to obtain it if you don’t defeat this boss with Monoco). Defeating it awards a Perfect Chroma Catalyst, and if this is your final skill for Monoco you will also receive the trophy/achievement  Feet Collection.

Boss: Clea – After defeating the four bosses, proceed through the door and to the back of the area to face Clea.

Clea attacks by summoning other Nevrons to deal damage to you, so you need to pay attention to what she is calling for the types of attacks to avoid. When you are hit she will heal herself at the end of her turn, so you need to avoid being hit if at all possible, and try to deal large amounts of damage to her to bring her down. The Nevrons she summons do a large number of attacks in quick succession and can be hard to see at first, so it may be better to try dodging instead of parrying all the time just to avoid damage.

Clea is weak to Void, so using Maelle with Cheater and her skills Last Chance followed by Sword Ballet is a good way to deal large amounts of damage to her. Switching your other party members to Void damage weapons if possible is also a good idea. You should have plenty of Recoat at this point in the game so don’t be afraid to use some to set your party up around dealing with her. You should also make sure you’ve completed all of Maelle’s relationship levels, as her level 3 Gradient Attack does a huge amount of Void damage and can potentially instantly kill Clea if she has around a third health remaining. Don’t be scared to use it if you start downing your other party members.

For beating Clea you receive the Clea’s Life Pictos, another Perfect Chroma Catalyst, and the trophy/achievement  Clea. You can speak to the Young Boy before you leave to receive an outfit for either Maelle, Lune, or Sciel.

Side Area – Renoir’s Drafts

Renoir’s Drafts is the final side area, including the strongest boss in the game at the end. It is reached by interacting with the spot in the water south between Visages and Sirene.

Expedition Flag – Entrance

Record #33: Endless Light – From the flag, go down the ramp and turn to the left to grapple up to a building. Follow the path and the record is on the ground to the right. If you picked up all prior records you will earn the trophy/achievement  Conoisseur.

Perfect Chroma Catalyst – When you reach the wooden structure after a couple groups of enemies, go to the left where there is a rock you can break to open a path. Grapple up to the platform above where you can find a Chromatic Creation miniboss. Defeat it to receive the material.

Expedition Flag – Golden Tree

No trophy/achievement related collectibles.

Side Area – The Abyss

The Abyss is reached by entering the portal in the Golden Tree.

Expedition Flag – Simon

Boss: Simon

Simon is the strongest boss in the game, and will put your avoidance skills (or build overpowerness) to the test. The main mechanic unique to Simon is that if he kills any of your party members and they aren’t immediately revived by a Pictos/Lumina effect, he has the potential to remove them completely so they can’t be revived. This means you should set up your party with abilities that either prevent party members from dying or revive them on death. He will also still your shields out of turn order to shield himself. When he gathers Chroma around a character he will also instantly set their health to 1 regardless of what they were at, and this can’t be avoided. Otherwise he only does a handful of combo attacks which are relatively easy to parry or dodge.

If you thought the fight was easy, it was because he’s a two part boss, and if you die in the second part you need to do it again, though you do get the XP reward each time to make up some of the pain.

In the second part he will return any defeated part members and become significantly more powerful. Now he attacks with longer combo strings, and any time he swings his sword for normal combos there is a second hit that occurs immediately, so always be prepared to parry or dodge twice in a row. He will still steal shields, set character health to 1, and remove dead characters during this part of the fight, so you need to make sure you are prepared to avoid his attacks.

When he gets below half health, he will use an attack that will instantly remove your current party, even if they are at full health, forcing you to use your backup party, then become significantly stronger, doing even longer combo strings. There are two ways to deal with this, either set up your other two party members so you can finish him off (possibly moving one of your main three to come in with the backup party) or take him out before he performs this attack. Because of how much more involved his attacks become after he forces your second team in, taking him out from above half health is the preferred method overall. The best way to do this is typically using the strong Maelle setups, or either Verso or Maelle’s level 3 Gradient attacks to deal massive damage to the boss. If you’ve been playing with Maelle as your main damage dealer then you want to stick with her as your main for this fight. Give her the Pictos/Lumina First Strike and Cheater to always have her go first and output as much damage as possible. During the second part of the fight sit on the Level 3 Gradient charge until you have him just above half health, then set up a mark/burn combo on the boss and use Gommage with Maelle when she is in Virtuouse stance.

Defeating the boss awards 50 x Colour of Lumina, 2 x Perfect Chroma Catalyst, the Simoso weapon for Verso, and the trophy/achievement  Simon.

Journal #49: Simon – On the ground where Simon was sitting, able to be picked up after defeating him. If you have picked up all prior Journals then you will receive the trophy/achivement  Follow the Trail.

At this point all you should have left is reaching Level 99. If you want to play through NG+ you can do that now, but if you want to grind this out without playing NG+ the best way is fighting the Gestral Merchant located in Renoir’s Drafts.

If you didn’t locate the Merchant earlier go to the Golden Tree flag, then go down the ramp into the area with the building. Behind the enemies there is a ramp that allows you to grapple up to the building where the Merchant is located.

Fighting this Merchant involves a fight against it and two other enemies, and if you beat it without being damaged it awards around 2.1 million XP. The best method to do this is either using Verso or Maelle and setting up their combos that allow you to hit all enemies at once with a large amount of damage. With Verso this involves using the Chevalam weapon to start at rank S then using the Phantom Stars skill. With Maelle this involves setting up a combo with the skill Last Chance to switch to Virtuouse Stance (or using a weapon starting her in Virtuouse Stance) then using the skill Phantom Strike. Whichever you go with you want to equip them with Pictos/Lumina such as First Strike and Cheater, then any you have that increase damage based on them being the only active character. If you were using Maelle as your main damage dealer already, she is the easier one to go with, and you want to try and set up her first turn by shooting the Merchant to burn/mark them, and her second turn use Phantom Strike to take out all enemies in one hit. With the correct setup this takes about 30 seconds per run, and you can immediately fight the Merchant again without needing to go back to the flag to respawn enemies. Once you get at least one character to level 99 you will earn the trophy/achievement  Survivor, completing all trophies/achievements and awarding the platinum trophy.
